But let’s be honest — they’ve also become a beast of an industry, often piling on stress, expectations, and financial strain. That’s where elopements come in, offering a fresh, modern take on tying the knot. And if you ask me, elopements aren’t just a “different” way to say “I do” — they might just be the better way.

Here’s why choosing an elopement over a traditional wedding could be the best decision you’ll ever make.

1. Intimacy Over Industry

Traditional weddings often feel like a performance. There’s a guest list to manage, a timeline to follow, and a sea of people watching your every move. Elopements strip away the fanfare and focus on what really matters: you and your partner.

Imagine exchanging vows with just the two of you (or a small circle of your closest loved ones) in a breathtaking location. The quiet intimacy allows you to truly be present in the moment, rather than worrying about whether the cake arrived on time or if Aunt Martha likes the seating chart.

2. Your Love, Your Rules

Elopements give you total freedom. Want to say your vows at sunrise on a mountaintop? Go for it. Dreaming of a ceremony by the ocean, barefoot in the sand? Done. With an elopement, there’s no need to stick to traditions or societal expectations.

It’s a day entirely tailored to you and your partner — as it should be. No compromises. No obligations. Just love and authenticity.

3. Less Stress, More Connection

Weddings can feel like a second full-time job. From managing vendors to coordinating schedules, it’s easy to get bogged down in the logistics. Elopements, on the other hand, are refreshingly simple.

With fewer moving parts, you can focus on the connection between you and your partner. You can laugh, cry, and soak in every moment without worrying about running late or juggling 200 guests.

4. It’s Budget-Friendly Without Sacrificing Meaning

Let’s talk money. The average wedding costs tens of thousands of dollars — and that’s not even factoring in the stress of trying to stay on budget.

Elopements, by contrast, allow you to invest in what truly matters: an unforgettable experience. Instead of spending on elaborate decor or catering for hundreds, you can splurge on a dream destination, an amazing photographer, or a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

5. An Adventure to Remember

Eloping isn’t just a ceremony; it’s an adventure. Whether you’re hiking to a secluded waterfall, exchanging vows under the stars, or jetting off to a romantic city, your elopement becomes more than a wedding day — it’s a story you’ll cherish forever.

Traditional weddings are memorable, sure. But an elopement? It’s the kind of experience you’ll relive again and again, smiling every time you tell the story of how you said “I do.”

6. The Focus Stays on Your Love

One of the best things about an elopement is that it eliminates distractions. You’re not worried about impressing guests, pleasing family members, or keeping up appearances. Instead, the spotlight stays where it belongs: on the love you share with your partner.

This is your moment. Why share it with anyone who doesn’t make your heart light up?

Final Thoughts

Weddings are beautiful, but they’re not for everyone. If the thought of a big, traditional celebration doesn’t spark joy for you, it’s okay to do something different. Eloping is a chance to reclaim your wedding day and make it truly yours — intimate, meaningful, and unforgettable.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the size of the guest list or the extravagance of the event. It’s about celebrating the love you and your partner share in a way that feels authentic and true to who you are.

So, if you’re dreaming of a wedding day that’s free from stress, full of adventure, and completely centered on your love story — maybe it’s time to consider an elopement. Who knows? It might just be the best decision you ever make.

P.S. As a photographer, I can tell you this: elopements are magic. If you need someone to capture your epic love story, I’d be honored to help. Let’s create something beautiful together.

This wedding feature was taken at Charles Krug Winery in Napa Valley.

Your Narrative blog will appear here, click preview to see it live.
For any issues click here

A Summer Engagement Session At Cannon Beach: Marissa and Kevin

Courtney Bowlden

Engagements

cannon beach summer picnic engagement photo session

A Summer Love Story at Cannon Beach: Engagement Session

There’s something truly magical about Cannon Beach in the summer. The golden light dipping low over Haystack Rock, the rhythmic crash of the waves, and the cool breeze that carries the scent of saltwater and freedom—it’s a place that feels like a world apart. When Marissa and Kevin reached out to me about their engagement session, they described a vision that was more than just photos: they wanted to capture their love story in its purest form. And for them, that meant including two things they cherish most—a picnic under the open sky and their beloved Jeep, which has carried them on countless adventures.

Planning the Session: Bringing Their Vision to Life

From the start, it was clear Marissa and Kevin wanted their engagement photos to feel personal and authentic. “We don’t want anything too stiff or formal,” Marissa had said during our first call. “We want it to feel like us.”

After brainstorming ideas together, we settled on the perfect combination—a casual summer picnic on the beach, followed by playful shots with their Jeep at sunset. Their Jeep wasn’t just a vehicle; it was a symbol of their shared love for exploration, road trips, and spontaneous escapes. I loved how they wanted to integrate these meaningful elements into their photos—it was a reminder of why I love capturing love stories like theirs.

The Day of the Shoot: Sunshine, Sand, and Laughter

We met in the late afternoon when the sun was just beginning to soften. Marissa and Kevin had brought everything for their picnic: a plaid blanket, a basket filled with their favorite snacks, and a chilled bottle of rosé.

As they set up the picnic near the dunes, I watched the way they moved together—effortlessly, in sync, as if they were in their own little world. Marissa laughed as Kevin attempted to open the rosé with a little too much gusto, and the cork went flying into the sand. These small, unscripted moments are the heart of what I love to capture.

The session unfolded naturally from there. They shared bites of fresh fruit, clinked their glasses, and let loose with big, belly laughs. Between shots, we chatted about their favorite road trips in the Jeep, like the time they camped under the stars in Moab or drove along the winding roads of Big Sur.

Jeep Adventures at Sunset

As the sun dipped closer to the horizon, we turned our attention to the Jeep. Parked at the edge of the beach, it gleamed in the golden light—a rugged yet romantic backdrop for the next part of their session.

Kevin and Marissa climbed onto the hood and leaned into each other, looking perfectly at home. I encouraged them to be playful, and soon they were stealing kisses, laughing, and even tossing their shoes aside to run along the shoreline.

One of my favorite shots from the day was when they stood beside the Jeep, holding hands, with the vast ocean stretching behind them. The moment felt expansive, full of promise—a visual echo of the life they’re building together.

Why This Session Stands Out

What made this session so special wasn’t just the breathtaking scenery or the perfectly planned details. It was the way Marissa and Kevin were so unapologetically themselves. Their joy, their connection, and their love for adventure came through in every frame.

As the last light of day faded and we packed up, Marissa looked back at the beach and said, “This was perfect. It’s exactly how we imagined it.”

A Reflection

Cannon Beach has always held a special place in my heart, but sessions like this make it even more meaningful. It’s not just about the stunning landscapes—it’s about the stories that unfold here, the couples who make it their own, and the memories we create together.

If you’re dreaming of an engagement session that feels like you—complete with the moments, places, and things you love most—let’s make it happen. Because at the end of the day, your love story deserves to be told in the way only you can.

Are you ready to plan your own adventure-filled session or destination elopement? Let’s chat—I can’t wait to tell your story.

Your Narrative blog will appear here, click preview to see it live.
For any issues click here

5 of My All Time Favorite Photography Accessories

Courtney Bowlden

For Photographers

favorite photography accessories

My Favorite Photography Accessories: Tools That Make the Job Easier and Cooler Over my 16 years in the photography business, I’ve tried and tested countless accessories. Some were a passing phase, while others have become indispensable parts of my workflow. Today, I want to share a few of my favorite accessories that not only make my job easier but also add a little flair to my setup. These are the tools I can’t live without, and if you’re a photographer, they might just change the game for you too!

1. Spider Holster: My Utility Belt for Photography

The Spider Holster is, hands down, one of my all-time favorite accessories. Not only that but I have had it the longest. At weddings, people often tell me it looks like something straight out of a superhero movie — “like Batman or something,” they say. And honestly, they’re not wrong. This holster allows me to securely carry my camera on my hip, keeping my hands free when I’m not shooting. It’s a lifesaver during long sessions or events when I need to move quickly and keep my camera easily accessible. Plus, it’s ergonomic, reducing strain on my neck and shoulders compared to traditional camera straps.

2. Peak Design Bag: Comfort Meets Functionality

I was gifted this bag but it’s become another favorite accessory of mine. Finding the perfect camera bag is like finding the perfect pair of shoes, especially on wedding days. It needs to be comfortable, durable, and stylish. My Peak Design bag checks all those boxes and more. It’s super comfortable, even when I’m carrying a full load of gear, and the thoughtful design makes accessing my equipment a breeze. Whether I’m on location or traveling for a shoot, this bag keeps everything organized and within reach. It’s a must-have for any photographer who values both form and function. Go check it out- I promise it’ll blow your mind!

3. Water-Resistant Anti-Shock SD Card Holder: Organization is Key

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that staying organized is crucial in photography. The Water-

Resistant Anti-Shock Holder for SD cards has been a game-changer for me. Not only does it keep my SD cards safe from accidental damage, but it also helps me stay on top of which cards are in use and which are empty.

4. Stick-On Camera Memory Card Labels: Stay Organized in Style

After back to back weddings I can sometimes get disorganized with my SD cards. These labels are a small but mighty addition to my organizational tools. With the Stick-On Camera Memory Card Labels, I can easily mark what’s on each card, making it a breeze to find the right one during a shoot. Combined with my SD card holder, these labels help me maintain order and avoid any unnecessary stress.

5. Lexar Gold Series Professional SD Cards: Reliability I Can Trust

When it comes to SD cards, reliability is everything. The Lexar Gold Series Professional SD cards have earned my trust time and time again. With their high-speed performance and robust build quality, I never have to worry about losing precious shots or dealing with slow write speeds during fast-paced shoots. These cards are an essential part of my kit, giving me the confidence to focus on capturing the moment without any technical hiccups.

Why These Accessories Matter

Every photographer has their unique style and preferences, but the right tools can make all the difference. For me, these accessories enhance my workflow, keep me organized, and add a touch of personality to my setup. Whether it’s the superhero-like vibe of the Spider Holster, the comfort of the Peak Design bag, or the peace of mind from reliable SD card storage, these items are more than just gear — they’re part of what helps me deliver my best work.

If you’re looking to elevate your photography game, I highly recommend giving these accessories a try. Have a favorite accessory of your own? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

One last thing I forgot to mention is with all the traveling that I do, I need a reliable roller bag to carry all my gear in. She owns a wedding dress boutique in Paris called Kladek, and honestly, it’s just as elegant and magical as it sounds. Freida’s boutique specializes in sleek, modern, and simplistic designs—the kind of dresses that make you stop and say, “Wow, that’s pure art.” And what makes it even more special is the story behind the name Kladek. It’s her grandmother’s last name, and Freida chose it as a way to honor her family and roots. Isn’t that so heartwarming?

The Journey to Kladek

Freida’s journey to opening Kladek is nothing short of inspiring. She studied fashion design in London, where she fell in love with the craftsmanship and detail that go into couture. After years of honing her skills in the world of high-end fashion, working with some of the biggest couture houses, she decided to follow her heart and start something of her own. That’s how Kladek came to life.

When I asked Freida why she focuses on modern, minimalist wedding dresses, she said she’s always believed that simplicity is timeless. Her designs are for brides who want to feel confident, chic, and totally themselves on their big day. It’s all about letting the bride’s personality shine through, without overwhelming details or distractions.

Inside the Boutique

Frieda’s business started in her small Paris apartment and now into a lovely boutique. I wanted to feature her beautiful work space in her apartment to remind her of where she started.

Why Freida’s Boutique Stands Out

What sets Kladek apart is Freida’s deep understanding of her craft and her clients. Her years in couture taught her the importance of quality and precision, and she brings that same level of care to her boutique. She sources the most beautiful, sustainable fabrics and works with skilled artisans to ensure every gown is perfect. But it’s not just about the dresses; it’s about how Freida makes her clients feel. Brides walk away from Kladek not only with their dream dress but with memories of feeling truly special and heard.

A Legacy of Love and Elegance

Freida often says her grandmother was her biggest inspiration—a woman of strength, grace, and style. By naming her boutique Kladek, she’s carrying forward a legacy of love and elegance. And honestly, you can feel that spirit in every corner of the boutique. It’s not just a business; it’s a piece of her heart.

I couldn’t be prouder of Freida and what she’s created with Kladek. It’s more than a boutique; it’s a place where dreams come to life, where brides find more than a dress—they find a moment of magic. If you ever find yourself in Paris, do yourself a favor and visit her boutique. Trust me, it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.

Frieda has become a dear friend. One of my favorite pieces is Renee and Ava. They are breathtaking, aren’t they?! I love how she gathers inspiration from all over the world, including Mic Jagger and Harry Styles. She even was inspired by her own wedding dress, which she made herself. What talent, right? She is hard working and so kind. When I met her for the first time in a coffee shop, I felt like we already knew one another. I feel blessed that she reached out to me that one day on Instagram and that I accepted to meet with her. My life has been changed.

Your Narrative blog will appear here, click preview to see it live.
For any issues click here

#1 Wedding Florist in Seattle: Brand Session for Gina

Courtney Bowlden

Headshots

bellingham photographer

bellingham portrait photographer

bellingham wedding photographer

brand photography

branding photographer

business headshot photography

business headshots

destination wedding photographer

fun brand photography

natural light photographer

pacific northwest wedding photographer

portrait photographer

professional headshots

seattle wedding

seattle wedding florist

seattle wedding photographer

wedding bouquet

wedding florist

wedding flowers

wedding photographer

wedding photography

Gina is a fantastic florist out of Seattle, Washington. I had the privledge of photographing her branding headshots this fall.

Brand Photography For Seattle Florist

Okay, let me tell you about this amazing brand session I had with Gina—she’s a florist and just the sweetest person ever! The whole vibe of the shoot was to create photos that totally showed off her creativity, her warm personality, and the magic she brings to her floral business. Let me give you the inside scoop on how we set it all up.

Getting to Know Gina

Before anything, I spent some time chatting with Gina to really understand her and her business. She’s all about pushing the envelope, continuously growing and trying new things. She told me she wanted her photos to feel super authentic and show off how much care she puts into her work. This little brainstorming session helped us nail down the look and feel for the shoot.

Planning the Session

We decided to do a mix of lifestyle shots and product shots. Her workshop—oh my gosh, it’s adorable—was the perfect spot. Think rustic wood tables, tons of natural light, and shelves overflowing with blooms. It had all the cozy, creative vibes.

Gina prepped some of her favorite flowers and tools, and we even talked about her outfits ahead of time. She went with neutral tones and a cute floral print that matched her brand so perfectly. These little details made everything look so put-together.

Shoot Day Vibes

On the day of the shoot, I got there early to check out the lighting and make sure everything was just right. Her workshop gets this gorgeous morning sunlight that made everything glow. We tidied up a bit—not too much, though, because we wanted it to look real and lived-in.

We started with candid shots of Gina doing her thing: picking stems, trimming leaves, and arranging bouquets. It was so cool to see her in her element. Her hands, the flowers, and the whole process—it was like art in motion.

Portraits and Details

Then we moved on to some portraits. I had her hold a few of her arrangements and even got her laughing in while she worked on her laptop. I love making people laugh because I find it’s a more genuine smile. We also zoomed in on some close-ups of her finished bouquets—the textures, colors, and details were just stunning. She has a podcast as well, so I wanted to feature some close ups of the mic and her laptop. These photos are going to be perfect for her website and Insta as well as her podcast.

Wrapping It Up

After a couple of hours, we had so many amazing shots. We even reviewed a few together to make sure everything felt true to her vision. By the end of the session, we’d captured not just her talent but her love for what she does.

Honestly, working with small business owners like Gina is the best. Seeing her face light up when she got her photos was the cherry on top. This is why I love what I do! I will be posting more photos of bouquets that I have worked with Gina on. I can’t wait to share more images with you. They are truly some of my favorite photos I have taken.

In my last post I talked about how I have started doing more brand sessions like this one. I am loving them, too! I am taking more studio headshot sessions and brand sessions, so if you are in need of a new headshot or brand photos for marketing, I would love to chat with you.

Your Narrative blog will appear here, click preview to see it live.
For any issues click here

5 Tips To Take Better Photos… With Your iPhone!

Courtney Bowlden

For Photographers

Headshots

become a better photographer

better photography

better photos

iphone photos

photographer lessons

photography lessons

photography skills

take better photos

Tips To Taking Great Photos On Your Iphone Capturing beautiful moments with your children or family is one of the greatest joys of parenting. With smartphones becoming ubiquitous, parents have the perfect tools at their fingertips to document these precious memories. However, many parents may feel overwhelmed by the idea of photography or think that stunning photos require professional equipment. The good news is that stunning photographs can be taken with just a smartphone and a little guidance. In this article, we will share ten simple tips for parents to capture stunning photos on their phones, helping you create lasting memories effortlessly.

Tip 1: Use Natural Light to Your Advantage

Understanding Light Sources

Lighting is one of the most crucial elements in photography. Natural light often provides the best conditions for taking photos, making your subjects look vibrant and alive (even for selfies). Try to position your subjects so that they are facing a light source, such as a window or outdoor sunlight. Avoid harsh overhead lights or direct sunlight that can cast unflattering shadows on your subjects.

Soft, diffused light from an overcast day or during the golden hour—just after sunrise and before sunset—can help to enhance your images, however, avoid backlighting your subjects as the photos will not turn out the way your eyes see it.

Best Times of Day for Photos

Midday sun can be harsh and create deep shadows, so if you must shoot during this time, look for shaded areas. Alternatively, you can use the sun’s direction to create interesting silhouettes by positioning your subjects against the light.

Tip 2: Experiment with Angles

High and Low Angles

Changing your perspective can dramatically alter a photo’s impact. Instead of shooting from eye level, get creative with your angles. Try shooting from above or below your subject. A low angle can make your child appear larger than life, empowering them in the shot, while a high angle can capture a unique view of their world.

Experimenting with angles not only adds variety to your photos but also can help convey different feelings. For example, looking up towards your child can create a sense of wonder, while shooting from a higher angle can give a more playful, candid feel.

Unique Perspectives

Don’t hesitate to include unusual perspectives in your shots. Try to photograph your kids from behind, capturing their actions and the scenery in front of them. This approach can tell a compelling story and allows viewers to engage with the photograph on a deeper level.

Incorporating elements of the environment, such as trees, flowers, or everyday objects, can also add layers of interest and context to your images, making them more visually appealing.

Tip 3: Take Advantage of Editing Apps

Popular Editing Tools

After capturing your photos, editing them can enhance their overall quality. There are many editing apps available that cater to smartphone users, such as Snapseed, VSCO, and Adobe Lightroom Mobile. These applications provide a range of tools to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and even crop your images.

Many of these apps are user-friendly, making it easy for even the most novice photographers to improve their images with just a few taps. Don’t be afraid to explore different filters and adjustments to find a style that suits your photography aesthetic.

Simple Enhancements

While editing is important, it’s essential to keep it subtle. Over-editing can lead to unnatural-looking photos. Instead, focus on enhancing the natural beauty of your images. Simple adjustments like brightening shadows, adding warmth, or sharpening details can significantly improve your photos without making them look artificial.

Taking the time to edit your images can turn a good photo into a great one, allowing you to showcase your family’s moments in the best light possible.

Tip 4: Use the Rule of Thirds And Leveling Images Correctly

Understanding Composition

The rule of thirds is a fundamental principle in photography that can dramatically enhance your composition. Imagine dividing your image into a 3×3 grid. The goal is to place your subject along the grid lines or at their intersections. This technique creates balance and helps draw the viewer’s eye to the focal point of the image.

Using the rule of thirds can elevate the quality of your photos by providing a more dynamic composition. It encourages you to think critically about how you frame your subject and the surrounding elements in your shots.

Grid Lines on Your Phone

Most smartphones have grid line options within their camera settings. Enabling this feature can help you practice the rule of thirds while shooting. As you become accustomed to this technique, you’ll start to intuitively compose your photos more effectively, leading to improved results.

While the rule of thirds is a great guideline, feel free to break it occasionally for artistic effect. Sometimes, placing your subject in the center can create a powerful image, especially in portrait photography.

(this photos has dappled lighting through some trees to create a beautiful glow around the kids)

Tip 5: Play with Focus and Blur

Focusing on the Subject

Smartphones today often come with advanced focusing capabilities that allow you to emphasize your subject while blurring the background. This technique, known as shallow depth of field, draws attention to your subject, creating a more engaging image.

To achieve this effect, tap on the screen where your subject is located to focus. Many smartphones allow you to adjust the focus point, giving you more control over the resulting image. Experimenting with focus can help create a professional look in your family photos.

Creating a Dreamy Background

A blurry background can also impart a dreamy quality to your photographs, making them feel more artistic. To achieve this, try to separate your subject from the background by increasing the distance between them. The more distance there is, the more pronounced the blur effect will be.

This technique can be especially effective for portraits, where you want the focus to remain on the person while creating a beautiful, soft backdrop. Combining this with good lighting can result in stunning images that capture the essence of your family beautifully.

Conclusion

Capturing stunning photos with your smartphone is accessible to every parent, regardless of photography experience. By utilizing natural light, experimenting with angles, and incorporating creative techniques, you can document beautiful memories of your family’s journey. Remember to focus on emotional connections, have fun, and embrace the candid moments that make family life special.

With the tips outlined in this article, you’ll be well on your way to creating a stunning collection of family memories that can be cherished for years to come. So grab your phone, get out there, and start capturing those magical moments!

The Most Asked Questions:

What is the best smartphone for photography?

The best smartphone for photography varies based on personal preference and budget. It’s a combination of guided posing and letting those genuine interactions unfold. After 16 years in doing family photography sessions, I’ve learned there are at least 5 key poses every family session needs to tell a beautiful, cohesive story. Here’s my go-to list for poses that never fail to create memorable images families cherish for years to come.

1. The Classic Family Portrait – Everyone Looking at the Camera

This is the iconic shot every family wants—the one they’ll frame, send to family, and use for holiday cards. I start each session by gathering the entire family in a comfortable arrangement, usually with the parents as an anchor point and the kids grouped around them. Encourage relaxed postures and small smiles, so the result feels natural. This shot captures everyone’s personality and ensures that each member shines. I always try and take a lot of photos here because the little ones are always moving and looking away.

*Tip:* Direct everyone to think about a happy memory or something that makes them laugh—this keeps smiles genuine and eyes bright.

2. Just the Kids – Playful and Sweet

This is where the kids can let loose and showcase their personalities. Start with a posed shot of them standing or sitting together, then quickly move into action shots where they can be themselves. Let them make funny faces, hug each other, or even dance around. Capturing these playful moments brings out their bond and individual quirks. I also love having them tickle or hug to get them to interact with one another.

*Tip:* If kids are feeling shy, ask about their favorite things or play a game. This creates a relaxed vibe and helps capture those infectious, natural smiles. I also recommend having the parents bring their favorite toy and/or stuffed animal… or treats! I am all about bribing!

3. Just the Parents – An Intimate Moment

Amid the chaos, it’s important to capture a few intimate shots of the parents. These photos remind them of the foundation of their family, showcasing the love that brought everyone together. Guide them into a simple embrace or have them stand close, looking at each other or off into the distance. The goal is to create a comfortable, romantic atmosphere that shows their bond without too much posing.

*Tip:* Encourage a bit of movement—walking together hand in hand, or simply talking to each other quietly—so it feels like an authentic moment rather than a posed shot.

4. The Whole Family Having Fun Together

This is where the magic happens! Capture the family laughing, talking, and enjoying one another’s company. To create this atmosphere, prompt them with a fun activity. It might be playing a simple game, a round of “Simon Says,” or even a silly dance. It doesn’t have to be elaborate—just something that gets everyone moving and laughing together.

This candid, natural shot reveals the family’s unique energy and creates some of the most cherished images of the session.

*Tip:* Stay ready to capture spontaneous interactions, whether it’s a child laughing at a parent’s joke or siblings giving each other a playful nudge.

5. Individual Shots of Each Child

Every child has their own distinct personality, and individual portraits capture that essence beautifully. Guide them into simple, comfortable poses and let them show off who they are. You might ask them to stand or sit in a relaxed position, looking straight into the camera or glancing off to the side. These individual portraits are often some of parents’ favorite images because they reflect the kids’ unique traits.

*Tip:* Try incorporating props, like a beloved toy or book, to make the child feel more at ease and add a personal touch to the portrait.

Creating Lasting Memories

These five essential poses allow you to tell a comprehensive story of each family, blending posed portraits with candid moments that feel authentic. I have lately been so excited because I love being able to help other businesses thrive and grow by providing them with great photos that they can use on social media, marketing ads and also their website. Have you ever been to a website and thought “these photos look outdated and terrible.” It turns me off and makes me not want to stay on their website or page. I have done a little research into why branding and headshots are so important for your business. These are some of my findings.

A great branding session is more than nice photos of you; it’s your digital handshake, your first impression in today’s visual world. When someone looks at your headshot, they’re assessing not just your appearance but also your professionalism, approachability, and the energy you bring to your work. A strong headshot builds immediate trust, helping potential clients, employers, and collaborators feel more connected to you before you even meet.

Think about it—whether it’s on LinkedIn, your website, or social media, your headshot will likely be the first thing people see. With the right branding headshots, you’re investing in an image that authentically conveys who you are and what you stand for. A powerful, high-quality image can communicate your brand’s essence instantly, setting you apart from competitors and making a memorable impression. Instead of a generic snapshot, a professional branding headshot makes your personality shine, shows your attention to detail, and lets people see your commitment to quality.

I provide branding photography sessions that cater to various professional styles, creating polished corporate headshots for reliability and dynamic personal branding images for entrepreneurs and creatives. I specialize in lifestyle and environmental portraits in relatable settings, as well as cohesive group and individual headshots for teams, ensuring a unified professional appearance. Each session is customized to showcase clients’ strengths and goals, helping them feel confident in connecting with their audience.
Shorten with AI

Here’s 3 Reasons Why A Branding Session Should Be Important To You

Investing in professional branding headshots can significantly enhance your online presence and credibility. Consider the following statistics:

– LinkedIn Engagement: Profiles featuring professional headshots receive 21 times more profile views and 36 times more messages, underscoring the importance of a polished image in networking and job searches.

– Website Conversion Rates: Websites that incorporate professional photos experience a 35% increase in conversion rates compared to those using generic or low-quality images, highlighting the role of quality visuals in attracting and retaining clients.

– User Engagement: Studies indicate that users spend 10% more time viewing images than reading text on a webpage, emphasizing the need for compelling visuals to capture and maintain audience attention.

These findings suggest that professional headshots not only enhance personal branding but also contribute to increased engagement and trustworthiness across various platforms.

*If you are curious about how much a branding session or headshots cost, or how to schedule your session, reply to this blog by going over to my contact page and filling out the form. And like any business, efficiency and organization are key. Luckily, there are some incredible tools out there that make the process smoother, faster, and way more fun! Let’s dive into five game-changing platforms every photographer should have in their toolkit.

1. Dubsado: Your Client’s New Best Friend

I was a little late to the game for this one because of the price, but as soon as I signed up, I saw a huge difference in the quality of leads I got because of how beautifully designed my proposals were. It’s fully customizable which I absolutely love. Now, think of Dubsado as your digital assistant, handling everything from client contracts to invoicing—without the stress. Plus, with customizable templates, it feels like you’ve got a personal business manager in your corner!

2. Canva: Design Made Easy (and Fun!)

Not a graphic designer? No problem! Canva is here to save the day. Whether you’re designing social media posts, promotional materials, or beautiful pricing guides, Canva makes it easy and fun. Congratulations! I remember when I moved on from hobby to professional and it with the best choice I ever made. But before you dive in, let’s chat about the tools you’ll need to get started, plus a few fun tips and tricks to make your first steps smooth, exciting, and rewarding. I have made many mistakes in my 16 years of business and I don’t want you to make them during your business endeavors, so I created this blog post to help you start your business off on the right foot.

—

1. Get the Right Camera: Your Trusted Companion

The camera is your right hand in this journey. But don’t worry—starting a photography business doesn’t mean you need to break the bank on the most expensive gear out there. For a solid beginner-friendly camera, you’ll want something versatile, reliable, and easy to use.

**Starter Cameras:** Canon EOS Rebel series, Sony Alpha a6000, or Nikon D3500. These options provide quality images and allow room to grow without over-complicating things. Remember that the lenses are really what make your images shine. It’s like having fine ingredients from a top chef instead of basic ingredients.

*Pro Tip: Don’t skip the manual! Learning your camera’s full potential is like unlocking superpowers for your shoots. Trust me, every time I get a new camera, this always helps the process. It might even speed up your post processing time, too.

—

2. Lens Love: Choosing the Right Glass

Once you’ve chosen a camera body, it’s time to pick your first lens. A 50mm lens is a great all-around choice, especially for portraits, as it’s versatile, sharp, and often called the “nifty fifty” because it does so much for so little.

Top Lens Picks for Starters: 50mm f/1.8 lens for portraits and a wide-angle lens (like a 24mm) if landscapes or events are more your style. I use the Sony G Masters 50mm f/1.2 and it’s my favorite lens. It hardly comes off my camera. The 24-70 2.8 lens is also another great starter lens

*Lens Tip:* A good lens can be more important than a top-of-the-line camera body, so this is where a smart investment pays off. They also don’t loose their value as quickly as the camera body does.

—

3. Lighting Essentials: Let There Be Light!

Natural light is a photographer’s best friend, but it can’t always be counted on—especially indoors or at events. To get started, a simple external flash or LED panel can help you create consistent lighting, making your images look polished and professional.

Starter Lighting Options: Neewer LED panels or a Godox flash. Affordable, portable, and will make your photos look amazing!

*Lighting Hack:* Try using a cheap reflector to bounce light back onto your subject for soft, flattering light without fancy equipment. This also works great when you are on a green lawn and you don’t want it to bounce onto your clients faces.

—

4. Practice, Practice, Practice.

—

5. Editing Magic: Software to Bring Out the Best in Your Shots

The shoot doesn’t end when you press the shutter! Editing helps bring your images to life. Adobe Lightroom is a top choice for beginners and pros alike—it’s intuitive, loaded with features, and makes editing a breeze. And if you want to go free, check out GIMP or Snapseed for basic edits.

Top Editing Software: Adobe Lightroom for easy and professional-looking edits; GIMP or Snapseed for great budget-friendly options.

*Editing Tip:* Try starting with small adjustments (like exposure and contrast) and build up as you get comfortable.

—

6. Storage and Backup: Protect Your Work

This one is important and will save you a lot of heartache and money. You’ll need space to store those growing files and depending on your megapixels from your camera, you might need more than another one. Be prepared with an external hard drive and/or cloud storage. I actually use both. There’s nothing worse than losing your photos, so back everything up from day one onto two different hard drives.

Storage Options: I highly recommend using a solid state drive and not a hard drive. They are less likely to corrupt or fail. Here is the one I have that I love and has been my trusty travel companion. I also use Dropbox (for cloud storage).

*Backup Tip:* Make it a habit to back up after each shoot. Better safe than sorry!

—

7. Portfolio and Website: Show the World Your Work

Your portfolio is your virtual storefront. Create a clean, easy-to-navigate online space where potential clients can see your style, contact you, and book you. Platforms like Showit (who I use), or even Instagram can be great places to start showcasing your work.

*Portfolio Hack: Start by building a portfolio with friends or family shoots until you have a range of work to display. Just ask people to photograph them, but don’t forget to have them sign a contract or waiver so you can use their images. Trust me on this. I recommend using these two sites for your contracts and waivers. They both are great.

8. Get Organized

The best thing is to get a Client Management System like Dubsado or Honeybook to keep your files and client questionnaires all in one place. Plus you’ll look professional to your clients. If you want to try either of these sites out, I have a code to use for a trial. Just send me a message and I’ll be happy to share it with you.

*Organizing Hack: On my SSD or Hard Drive I. create folders for the types of sessions I have (Engagement, Weddings, etc) and then create folders inside those main folders of the clients name and photoshoot date.

—

Final Thoughts

You’ve got this and I’m here to help you on your new business adventure. I want to see you and your business thrive. Starting a photography business is as much about your vision as it is about the tools you use and how much your practice. Every shoot, every edit, and every interaction with clients will help you refine your craft and build a business that reflects your unique style. With a bit of patience, practice, and the right tools, you’re well on your way to turning your passion into a successful photography business.
