Things a Wedding Photographer Does on the Wedding Day?

Most couples know their wedding photographer takes pictures on the wedding day, but what we actually do goes far beyond pressing a shutter. A professional wedding photographer is part artist, part director, part problem-solver, and part calming presence. After sixteen years photographing weddings across Utah, Seattle, Paris and destinations worldwide, I can confidently say that the photography role is one of the most behind-the-scenes yet essential elements of a wedding day running smoothly.

If you’ve ever wondered what a wedding photographer truly does on a wedding day, here’s a look at everything happening from the moment I arrive to the moment I pack up—and why each part matters for a seamless, elegant, and fully documented experience.

We Begin Long Before the Camera Comes Out

A successful wedding day starts with preparation. Before I even arrive, I’ve already:

  • Reviewed your timeline

  • Coordinated with your planner

  • Confirmed lighting conditions

  • Backed up equipment and packed multiple cameras, lenses, flashes, batteries, and memory cards

  • Checked weather (Utah and Seattle both love to keep us guessing)

  • Prepared a detailed shot list based on what matters most to you

A wedding photographer isn’t just showing up—we’re walking in with a plan, expertise, and an eye for emotional storytelling.

Capturing the Details That Set the Tone

When I arrive, I start with the details that create the visual narrative of your wedding. This includes:

  • Rings

  • Invitation suite

  • Shoes

  • Dress and veil

  • Floral bouquets

  • Personal heirlooms

  • Groom’s details

These photos are more than decorative—they’re the opening chapter of your wedding story. For styling inspiration, I often use soft linens, florals, or classic flat-lay boards like those from The Mrs. Box.

Every detail is carefully photographed with intention, because these are the elements you chose with love.

Documenting the Getting Ready Moments

This part of the day often includes some of the most emotional and unscripted moments—laughter with bridesmaids, hugs from parents, final touches, shared memories, and quiet anticipation.

During this time, I act as both a documentarian and a calming guide. If needed, I help:

  • Steam the dress

  • Pin boutonnières

  • Adjust ties and jewelry

  • Coordinate timing so you’re never rushed

Couples often tell me, “You kept me calm,” and that is something I take to heart. How you feel during the process will show in your images.

The First Look & Couples Portraits

Whether you choose to do a first look or see each other at the ceremony, I guide you through these moments with gentle direction and natural prompts. My goal is to capture emotion, connection, and authenticity—not stiff or overly posed images.

This part of the day also allows us to use the most flattering light and take portraits without stress. Utah’s mountains, Salt Lake’s golden sunsets, and Seattle’s gardens all create stunning backdrops for elevated, romantic portraits.

Family Photos, Wedding Party, and Group Coordination

This is where experience truly matters. Organizing family photo combinations and wedding party portraits requires:

  • Clear communication

  • Efficiency

  • Strong direction

  • Patience

  • And a friendly, confident presence

I keep this portion smooth and enjoyable, ensuring everyone knows where to be and what comes next. My goal is always to keep your day flowing—not to overwhelm you with endless posing.

The Ceremony: Quiet Observation, Fast Action

During the ceremony, I work quietly and intentionally, anticipating moments before they happen:

  • The groom’s reaction

  • Parents holding hands

  • Laughter during vows

  • The kiss

  • The moment you walk back down the aisle

Ceremonies move quickly, and experience is what ensures nothing important is missed.

Reception: Storytelling Through People, Light, and Energy

Once the celebration begins, I shift into a blend of candid documentary photography and elegant detail coverage. This includes:

  • Cocktail hour interactions

  • Décor and florals

  • Toasts

  • First dances

  • Cake cutting

  • Candid guest moments

  • Dance floor energy

Lighting changes rapidly during receptions, especially in dim Utah barns or Seattle ballrooms, so I use professional lighting gear to ensure everything looks clean, flattering, and vibrant.

Backup, Safety, and Final Coverage

After I leave your wedding, the work continues. I immediately back up your images in multiple locations to ensure they are safe and secure. Editing begins soon after, and each photo is refined with care, consistency, and attention to detail—your gallery is a piece of art, not just a collection of photos. I am not sure what other wedding photographer does on the wedding day, but this has been my practice for the last 16 years.

Why This All Matters

Your photographer isn’t just someone capturing images—they’re your partner in preserving your memories, managing the flow of the day, and creating a stress-free environment where you can be fully present with your soon to be husband/wife. A great photographer anticipates moments, reacts quickly, problem-solves quietly, and supports you from start to finish. It has been an absolute pleasure to be photographing weddings for so long.

When you hire an experienced wedding photographer, you’re investing in peace of mind, emotional storytelling, and an elevated experience from beginning to end.
