4 Tips Your Photographer Wants Your To Know
The Secret to Gorgeous Light and Peaceful Locations
Over the years, I’ve learned that timing can truly make or break a photo session so I wanted to put together this helpful post on tips your photographer wants you to know. These tips are some of the most overlooked but most important parts of planning your shoot. Whether we’re shooting in the mountains of Utah, along the streets of Paris, or in your cozy family home, the time of day can completely change the vibe, the lighting, and even your comfort level during the session.
So, let’s talk about why choosing the right time is so important—and why I always recommend specific windows during the day to my clients.
1. That Golden Light Isn’t Just a Myth
You’ve probably heard photographers swoon over “golden hour,” and trust me—it’s not just hype. This soft, warm light happens shortly after sunrise and just before sunset (think an hour before the sun sets). It casts the most flattering glow on your skin, reduces harsh shadows, and creates that dreamy, romantic feel you often see in my photos.
During midday, the sun is directly overhead and tends to create strong shadows, squinting, and uneven lighting—especially on faces. It’s not impossible to shoot during that time, but it’s definitely more challenging because we have to find good shade. Early morning or late evening light, on the other hand? Pure magic.
2. Avoiding Crowds Makes All the Difference
There’s nothing quite like showing up to your dream location only to realize… it’s packed and full of other people. Suddenly, you’re waiting for groups to move out of the frame or trying to find an angle without people in the background. It can really slow down the session and also create way more work for your photographer post processing.
When we plan your session for early in the morning or during sunset hours on weekdays, we often get locations (almost) to ourselves. That means less stress, more freedom to move around, and more intimate, natural-feeling photos. Plus, you’ll feel more at ease when you’re not being watched by a dozen strangers walking by. Trust me on this one (I lived in Paris for almost two years).
3. The Right Timing Reflects the Mood You Want
Want that soft, elegant, romantic feel in your photos? Let’s shoot during golden hour (sunrise or sunset). Want crisp, vibrant colors and a lifestyle feel? Mid-morning might be better. Timing affects more than just light—it shapes the emotion and aesthetic of your entire gallery. Have a look at this sunset engagement session in Suncadia.
We’ll also consider things like your kids’ nap schedules, temperatures during the seasons, and what the natural light is doing indoors if we’re doing an in-home session. Every session is customized, and timing plays a huge role in that. I want your session to be fun, enjoyable and memorable.
