Boudoir Photography: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

After all these years of being a photographer, I have come to learn that boudoir photography always seems so scary at first — but that in the end, you absolutely will have so much fun that you will want to book another boudoir photography session before you even get your images back. I get it. It is not in your comfort zone. The idea of being photographed in lingerie by someone you barely know, in a vulnerable and intimate way, is genuinely intimidating. I understand that more than most photographers do, because I have been on the other side of the lens myself.

I have had my own boudoir sessions done — and intentionally, by different photographers — specifically so that I could understand what you must be feeling when you walk through the door. I wanted to know what it feels like to be nervous before the session. What it feels like to stand in front of a camera in lingerie and not know what to do with your hands.

What it feels like when a photographer gives you a direction that immediately makes you feel more comfortable, and what it feels like when something is off and you cannot quite relax. I did this because I believe that the best way to serve my clients is to genuinely understand their experience — not just from the outside, but from the inside.

And here is what I learned from being on the other side: every single thing you are worried about before a boudoir photography session is something that a great photographer can help you through. The nerves dissolve. The self-consciousness lifts. And somewhere in the middle of the boudoir photography session, there is almost always a moment where you stop thinking about how you look and start actually enjoying yourself. That moment — the shift from nervous to genuinely free — is when the best boudoir photography happens. And it always comes. Every single time.

So if you have been curious about boudoir photography but have been sitting on the idea because it feels like too much, or too vulnerable, or like something that is for other people but not for you — this post about boudoir photography is for you. Let me tell you everything I know about what boudoir photography actually is, who it is for, what a boudoir photography session with me looks like, and why the version of you that exists right now is absolutely worth photographing.

So What Actually Is Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir photography is intimate portrait photography — images of you in your most personal and most confident self, typically in lingerie or other intimate attire like oversized shirts, made in a private setting with a photographer you trust. The word “boudoir” actually comes from the French, referred to a woman’s private dressing room or personal sitting space, a room entirely her own. That spirit of privacy and intimacy is exactly what boudoir photography is built around. Kind of beautiful, isn’t it?

Boudoir photography is an empowering experience that can change how you see yourself. Many clients discover a new appreciation for their bodies through boudoir photography.

But here is what I really want you to understand: boudoir photography is not about being someone you are not. It is not about performing a version of yourself that feels foreign or uncomfortable. The best boudoir sessions — the ones that produce the images people cry over when they see them for the first time — are the ones where the real person shows up. Their actual humor. Their actual softness. Their actual strength. My job as your photographer is not to make you look like someone else. It is to find what is genuinely beautiful about you and make sure the camera sees it too.

And I promise you — it is always there. Every single person I have ever photographed has something extraordinary about them that the camera loves. My job is to find it, and I am very good at finding it.

This Is Not Just for One Type of Person

One of the things I feel most strongly about in my boudoir photography work is making sure that every person who walks through the door knows, genuinely and specifically, that this is for them. Not for some idealized version of them. Them, today, exactly as they are.

This form of boudoir photography is for everyone, and it is a celebration of who you are at this moment. Many clients find that their boudoir photography session is a defining moment in self-acceptance.

I have photographed women of every age, every body size from 20-60+, every shape, and every background.

I have photographed new mothers who wanted to feel like themselves again after pregnancy.

I have photographed women in their 50’s and 60’s who decided that this particular decade deserved to be celebrated with something extraordinary to celebrate their bodies.

I have photographed people who had just finished cancer treatment or beat cancer and wanted to reclaim their relationship with their body again.

I have photographed brides, recent divorcées, women celebrating promotions, and people who had absolutely no special reason except that they finally decided they were worth it.

Every single one of them arrived nervous and not knowing what to expect. Every single one of them left differently than they came in. And many of them have since booked more boudoir sessions with me later.

Each boudoir photography session brings unique experiences that allow clients to walk away feeling transformed and beautiful. The power of boudoir photography lies in its ability to reveal your true self.

If you have been waiting until you lose weight, or until the timing is better, or until you feel more ready, I want to gently and lovingly tell you that the waiting is the only thing standing between you and photographs you will treasure for the rest of your life. The body you have right now is the one worth documenting. I mean that sincerely. For example, how many times do you look back at older pictures of yourself and think “I looked so good, but I thought I was so big.” There will never be a “right time” for a boudoir photography session. You just have to do it scared.

Why Do People Book Boudoir Sessions? The Real Reasons

The reasons for engaging in boudoir photography are deeply personal, and each session reflects the individuality of the client. Learning about these reasons can inspire others to explore boudoir photography.

People come to me for boudoir sessions for all kinds of reasons, and I want to name them specifically because sometimes seeing your own reason reflected back at you is the thing that finally moves you from thinking about it to actually doing it.

The most common reason I hear is a gift for a partner, for a wedding gift, an anniversary surprise, a Valentine’s Day present, something for a deployed military spouse. There is something deeply special about this kind of gift. It is intimate and personal in a way that nothing you can purchase will ever be, and it is made specifically for the relationship between the two of you. I have had clients tell me their partners cried when they received the album. That kind of response is not something you can buy at a store.

A lot of my clients also come for milestone celebrations — a significant birthday (I just did one for a 50th birthday), a major life transition like divorces (which is what I did), a health milestone like kicking Cancer or loosing a lot of weight, the end of something hard and the beginning of something new. These clients often describe the session as a marker, a deliberate act of saying: I am here, I am in this body, and this moment matters enough to document beautifully. I love this reason so much.

My own experience getting boudoir photos was about being able to find myself again after divorce. It was a way for celebrating me, everything I had been through and owning my beauty without apology. It was the most empowering and powerful experience I have had in a long time, which might be a reason I love photographing boudoirs so much. I have since done another one just for myself as a way to welcoming in a new chapter in my life.

Then there are the clients who come specifically for body reclamation — after pregnancy, after illness or surgery, after a relationship that quietly convinced them they were not beautiful. For these clients, the session is genuinely transformative in ways that go beyond photography. Seeing yourself through a photographer’s lens who is specifically looking for what is extraordinary about you, and seeing that reflected back in the images — it changes something. I have watched it happen. It is one of the greatest privileges of this work.

Boudoir photography sessions create a safe space to explore and reclaim your identity, which can be transformative for many individuals. Your journey through boudoir photography can empower and uplift.

And then there are the clients who come simply because they want beautiful photographs of themselves and they decided they were worth it. No deeper reason needed. That reason is completely sufficient and I celebrate it every time.

What a Boudoir Session With Me Actually Looks Like

I want to walk you through the whole experience from beginning to end, because one of the things that makes people most nervous about boudoir is not knowing what to expect. Let me take that uncertainty away.

Every boudoir photography session is tailored to meet your comfort level, ensuring that you feel secure throughout the entire experience. It is essential to establish trust, as it allows for more authentic boudoir photography.

We start with a consultation before anything else. This is where we actually talk — about what you are hoping for from the session, what you are nervous about, what kinds of images you love, what your vision is, and what I can do to make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout. Nothing about your session should feel like a surprise, and this conversation is how we make sure of that. I ask a lot of questions here, because the more I know about you before we start, the better I can serve you specifically.

From there, I give you specific guidance on wardrobe — what to bring, what to look for, what to avoid, and how to think about building a few looks for the session. I have a whole separate post in this series dedicated entirely to this topic, because it is genuinely important and genuinely nuanced, and I want you to have everything you need to make great choices. The short version: you do not need to spend a fortune on new lingerie. Some of the most beautiful images I have ever made were in simple, thoughtfully chosen pieces. We will figure this out together.

I also strongly recommend professional hair and makeup for your session. I have trusted artists I can connect you with who understand photography-specific application — which is different from everyday makeup in ways that matter significantly in photographs. Arriving with your hair and makeup done by someone who knows what they are doing removes a huge source of pre-session anxiety and lets us jump straight into the creative work. My own boudoir sessions taught me how much of a difference this makes. Walking in feeling professionally put together changes your entire energy from the first moment.a blond woman smiling and looking away while holding a sheer pink robe with fuzzy pink sleeves for her boudoir session in seattle washington

At the beginning of your boudoir photography session, I will guide every pose until you start feeling comfortable. Let me say that again clearly: you do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That is my job. I will tell you exactly where to put your hands, how to angle your body, where to look, and what expression to aim for.

My posing guidance comes from years of specific study and practice, and from my own experience of being on the other side of the lens and knowing what kind of direction actually helps versus what kind of direction just makes you feel more self-conscious. I will never leave you standing there wondering what to do.

As your boudoir photography session unfolds, the guidance I provide will help you capture the essence of who you are. This approach ensures that your boudoir session reflects your true beauty without over editing.

The session itself is relaxed, guided, and usually genuinely fun — especially once we get into it and the initial nerves wear off. I put on music. I talk to you. I tell you when something looks amazing and why. I redirect when something is not working without making you feel bad about it. My goal is for you to enjoy this experience, not just survive it — and in my experience, once the first twenty or thirty minutes pass, most clients stop thinking about the camera entirely and start just being in the moment. Those moments produce the most extraordinary photographs.

After the session comes the image reveal, and this is the part I want you to be prepared for emotionally. Seeing yourself through a photographer’s lens for the first time — seeing what the camera actually captured, which is almost always genuinely different from what you see in the mirror — is something that surprises nearly every client regardless of how many times I tell them in advance. The images are typically more beautiful than people expected. Sometimes significantly so. I have had clients cry. I have had clients laugh in disbelief. I have had clients say things like — I did not know I looked like that. The reveal is private, unhurried, and completely yours.

The culmination of your boudoir photography journey is the image reveal, where you witness the stunning results of our work together. It is a moment of celebration and joy.

The magic of boudoir photography lies in its ability to help you embrace your unique beauty and empower you. This transformative experience can be a profound moment in your life. I have seen it so many times and have personally gone through it myself.a black and white image of a woman's lower body wearing silver heels bending on her knees on a couch with her butt in the air

How to Choose the Right Boudoir Photographer

I want to say something honest here, because I think it matters: the most important quality in a boudoir photographer is not their technical skill. It is the safety and comfort they create in the session environment.

You are going to be in an intimate and potentially vulnerable situation with this person. Your emotional and physical comfort is the foundation on which every good boudoir photograph is built. If something about a photographer’s communication, their portfolio, or how they make you feel in the consultation gives you even a flicker of uncertainty, pay attention to that. The right photographer will make you feel genuinely safe before the session even begins.

Look at their portfolio carefully — not just for beautiful images, but for diversity. Do they photograph people who look like you? Do their clients look genuinely comfortable and genuinely themselves, or do the images feel stiff and performed? Both of these things tell you important information about what working with this photographer will actually be like.

Ask about their process. Ask how they handle client comfort. Ask what happens if you feel uncomfortable during the session. A photographer who has thought seriously about these questions will have clear and specific answers, and those answers will tell you everything you need to know.

And take the consultation seriously as your opportunity to evaluate them. You are interviewing them as much as they are getting to know you. If you walk away from the consultation feeling excited and genuinely at ease, that is your photographer. If you feel anything less — keep looking.

Why Right Now Is the Right Time To Book

I want to close with something I believe genuinely and completely, because I have watched it be true more times than I can count.

The version of you that exists right now — in this body, at this age, at this exact moment in your life — is the version worth photographing. Not the future version. This one.

I have never had a client look at their finished boudoir photography gallery and say they wished they had waited. I have had clients tell me, with genuine tears, that they are so glad they did not and that the boudoir session they almost did not make are now among the most meaningful things they own.

The courage it takes to book a boudoir session is simply the courage to say: I am worth this today. That courage is available to you right now. And I would be genuinely honored to be the photographer you bring it to.

Reach out through my contact page to talk about your vision for your boudoir photography session, ask any questions, and find out about availability. I promise — the conversation is the easiest part. And it is where everything beautiful begins.
