A Sunset Engagement Session at Cannon Beach, Oregon: Marissa & Kevin

Haystack Rock, golden hour light, a styled picnic on the sand, and a love story that was completely, unapologetically themselves.

If you’ve ever stood on the beach at Cannon Beach, Oregon as the sun dips toward the horizon and the light turns everything gold, you already understand why this stretch of the Oregon Coast is one of the most sought-after engagement session locations in the entire Pacific Northwest. There is something about this place — the drama of Haystack Rock rising 235 feet above the shoreline, the wide expanse of sand, the rhythmic crash of the waves — that makes every love story feel cinematic and timeless all at once.

This session with Marissa and Kevin was one of my absolute favorites. Not just because Cannon Beach is breathtaking — though it absolutely is — but because of how intentionally these two showed up for their session. They didn’t want something generic. They wanted something that looked and felt exactly like them. And they delivered in the most beautiful way.

About Cannon Beach: Why It’s One of the Best Engagement Session Locations on the Oregon Coast

Cannon Beach is a small seaside town on the Oregon Coast, located about one hour from Portland. The town is known for its dramatic Haystack Rock — a 235-foot sea stack that rises majestically from the water and is a protected marine sanctuary. During low tide, the tide pools at the base of Haystack Rock come alive with sea stars, anemones, and other marine life, and in spring and summer the rock serves as a nesting site for tufted puffins — one of the most remarkable wildlife sightings on the entire West Coast.

Cannon Beach consistently ranks among the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it’s easy to see why. The sand is wide and firm, the scenery is dramatic in every direction, and you can get terrific engagement photos here no matter what the weather holds. That last point matters more than it might seem — the Oregon Coast is famously unpredictable, and a skilled photographer knows how to work with the moody coastal light, the mist, and the drama of an overcast sky just as beautifully as with golden sunshine.

What makes Cannon Beach particularly special as an engagement session location is the sheer variety of backdrops available within a single stretch of coastline. You can move from intimate moments right at the water’s edge to dune-backed portraits, from wide sweeping compositions with Haystack Rock in the distance to close, candid frames in the soft evening light. Every step along the beach offers something different — and a two-hour session here rarely runs out of beautiful places to be.

Marissa & Kevin’s Engagement Session: How They Made It Their Own

From the very first conversation, it was clear that Marissa and Kevin had a specific vision — and it had nothing to do with stiff poses or formal portraits. They wanted their engagement session to feel like an extension of who they actually are as a couple: adventurous, warm, playful, and deeply in love with the simple pleasures of life together.

They had two requests that made this session unlike any other I’ve shot at Cannon Beach: a styled beach picnic, and photos with their Jeep.

The Picnic

We arrived in the late afternoon as the light was just beginning to soften toward golden hour. Marissa and Kevin set up their picnic near the dunes — a plaid blanket, a beautiful spread of their favorite things, and a chilled bottle of rosé that Kevin opened with slightly too much enthusiasm, sending the cork sailing into the sand. That moment of laughter — genuine, unscripted, completely theirs — set the tone for everything that followed.

What I love most about incorporating props like a picnic into an engagement session is exactly this: it gives couples something real to do, which produces moments that are real. They weren’t thinking about the camera. They were sharing bites of fruit, clinking their glasses, and talking about their favorite road trips. The images that came from those minutes are some of the most authentic and emotionally alive I’ve ever captured at this location.

If you’re considering adding a picnic element to your Cannon Beach engagement session, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It creates natural activity, gives the gallery a distinctive story arc, and makes the whole experience feel like a celebration rather than a photoshoot.

The Jeep

As golden hour arrived and the light turned that particular shade of amber that only happens at the Oregon Coast in the last thirty minutes before sunset, we moved to the Jeep. For Marissa and Kevin, their Jeep wasn’t just a vehicle — it was a symbol of everything they love to do together. Road trips to Moab. Drives along Big Sur. Every spontaneous escape they’ve taken since they met.

Parked at the edge of the beach and glowing in the evening light, it made for one of the most romantic and personal backdrops I’ve ever photographed. They climbed onto the hood, leaned into each other, and looked exactly as at home as they do in real life — because they were. The ocean stretched behind them, vast and golden, and the whole frame felt full of promise and possibility.

One of my favorite images from the entire session was the two of them standing beside the Jeep, hands intertwined, with the last light of the day falling across the wet sand behind them. It looked like a painting. It felt like them.

The Best Photography Locations at Cannon Beach

If you’re planning an engagement session at Cannon Beach, knowing where to shoot — and when — makes an enormous difference in your final gallery. Here’s a breakdown of the locations I love most and why:

The Main Beach Near Haystack Rock

This is the iconic Cannon Beach shot — Haystack Rock rising dramatically in the background, the wide sandy expanse in the foreground, the waves rolling in from the left. It’s iconic for a reason, and it never gets old. One favorite approach is positioning couples a bit farther away from Haystack Rock to avoid the crowds while still keeping the rock visible in the distance — which gives you the drama of the landmark without the tourist foot traffic that can cluster right at its base.

Tides matter more than almost anything else when shooting near Haystack Rock. Lower tide gives you significantly more room to move, especially near the rock itself — so checking the tide chart before your session is one of the most important things you can do in the planning process.

Chapman Point — Cannon Beach’s Best Kept Secret

Chapman Point is located in the northern part of Cannon Beach and has captivating views of the ocean. At low tide, it’s sometimes possible to access coves for very unique and private photos, and on a clear day you can see Haystack Rock in the distance. This is one of my favorite spots for couples who want the beauty of Cannon Beach without the crowds — and the basalt rock formations and sand dunes here create completely different compositions from the main beach.

Tolovana Beach

South of Haystack Rock, Tolovana Beach offers quieter shores and expansive views of the coastline with Haystack Rock visible in the distance. The wider expanse of sand here is perfect for movement-based shots — running, dancing, the kind of candid joy that produces some of the most emotionally powerful images of any session.

Ecola State Park

Just north of Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park offers sweeping vistas of the coastline and lush forested trails, including the Crescent Beach Overlook — an iconic panoramic viewpoint that captures the rugged beauty of the Oregon Coast. For couples who want to incorporate a forest element into their session — towering old-growth trees, moss-covered paths, dappled light filtering through the canopy — Ecola is extraordinary. It also provides a beautiful weather backup on overcast or misty days when the open beach feels less workable.

Hug Point

Just a few minutes south of Cannon Beach, Hug Point features gorgeous waterfalls, trails, and hilly forests — and a sea cave that is accessible at low tide and photographs unlike anything else on the Oregon Coast. For couples who want something genuinely unexpected and adventurous in their gallery, Hug Point is worth the short drive.

When to Schedule Your Cannon Beach Engagement Session

Timing is everything at Cannon Beach — and getting it right will make an enormous difference in your photos.

Golden Hour is Non-Negotiable

The best time for engagement photos at Cannon Beach is around sunset. Starting the session about an hour before sunset allows you to take full advantage of the beautiful golden light setting over the ocean. On overcast or foggy days — which are common on the Oregon Coast — starting an hour earlier ensures you have enough workable light for the full session.

In summer, the sun sets farther north, so positioning south of Haystack Rock is ideal for capturing the sunset colors behind the rock. In winter, the sun is lower and farther south, making it easier to capture the rock with the sunset directly behind it — which is why some photographers actually prefer the winter months for Haystack Rock sunset photography specifically.

Check the Tide Charts

This cannot be overstated. A low tide during your session dramatically expands the usable beach area, gives you access to the tide pools, and creates beautiful wet sand reflections that catch the last light of the day in the most extraordinary way. Check the NOAA tide charts before confirming your session time, and share the information with your photographer so you can plan around it together.

Consider the Shoulder Seasons

Summer is peak season at Cannon Beach and brings the largest crowds — which isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker, but is worth planning around. Cannon Beach is accessible and beautiful year-round, offering incredible scenery in every season from misty mornings to golden evening light. Spring and fall offer a version of Cannon Beach that feels quieter, more intimate, and honestly — with the moody coastal atmosphere and dramatic skies — often more beautiful than the bright summer days.

What to Wear for a Cannon Beach Engagement Session

Outfit choice at Cannon Beach requires a little more thought than most locations, for one simple reason: wind. The Oregon Coast breeze is real, consistent, and completely unpredictable — which actually works beautifully in photos when your outfit is chosen with that in mind.

Cannon Beach tends to photograph best with outfits that allow for movement and layering. Wind is part of the environment, so pieces that move with it tend to feel more natural than anything too rigid.

For her: A flowing midi or maxi dress in an earthy, neutral tone is the single most universally flattering choice for a Cannon Beach session. Cream, ivory, warm taupe, sage, dusty rose, or soft terracotta all photograph beautifully against the sand, the rock, and the ocean without competing with the landscape. The movement of a lightweight fabric in the coastal breeze adds dimension and romance to every single frame.

Bringing a casual outfit and a more dressy outfit for engagement photos adds variety to the gallery and allows the session to shift naturally as the light and energy change throughout the evening. A cozy oversized sweater or a tailored coat for the cooler evening portion of the session also photographs beautifully — and you’ll genuinely want it as the temperature drops after sunset.

For him: A well-fitted linen or cotton shirt in a warm neutral — cream, light blue, warm grey, olive — works beautifully. Layering a casual blazer or a classic flannel over a simple shirt gives you flexibility as the temperature changes and adds visual depth to the images. Avoid overly formal looks that feel disconnected from the beach setting, and stick to tones that complement rather than clash with whatever she’s wearing.

Practical tip: Bring shoes you don’t mind getting sandy — or go barefoot entirely. Some of the most beautiful Cannon Beach engagement images happen at the water’s edge, and worrying about your footwear is the fastest way to pull yourself out of the moment.

Making Your Session Personal: The Picnic Approach

One of the things that made Marissa and Kevin’s session so extraordinary was the decision to incorporate a picnic into the experience — and it’s something I recommend considering for any couple who wants their engagement photos to feel genuinely alive rather than posed.

A beach picnic gives you natural activity to engage in, which produces natural expression in your photos. Instead of wondering what to do with your hands or how to stand, you’re pouring wine, sharing food, laughing at the cork that just went flying. The camera is running, the light is beautiful, and you’ve forgotten entirely that this is a photoshoot.

Some ideas for making a picnic element work beautifully at Cannon Beach: a classic woven blanket, a wicker basket, fresh fruit and cheese, a bottle of champagne or rosé, fresh flowers laid casually across the blanket, and your favorite snacks from home. Keep the styling intentional but not overdone — the beach and the light do the heavy lifting, and everything else should simply feel like an extension of who you are.

Planning Your Cannon Beach Engagement Session: Practical Tips

A few final notes worth knowing before you book your Cannon Beach engagement session:

Arrive early. Parking at Cannon Beach fills up quickly, particularly on summer weekends. There are several public access points, and arriving earlier or later in the day typically means easier parking. For a golden hour session, arriving at least 90 minutes before your start time gives you breathing room to park, change, and settle in before we begin.

No permit required for standard sessions. For standard engagement sessions without large setups, permits are typically not required at Cannon Beach — which is one of the things that makes it such an accessible location for couples traveling from out of the area.

Respect the protected areas. Events and gatherings are not allowed within 100 feet of Haystack Rock because it is protected by the Oregon Islands Wildlife Refuge — but this still leaves an enormous amount of beautiful beach to work with, and a skilled photographer will know exactly how to incorporate the rock into the background from the appropriate distance.

Make a weekend of it. If you’re traveling to Cannon Beach specifically for your engagement session, give yourselves at least a full day or two to experience the town. The charming main street is full of art galleries, boutiques, and some of the best restaurants on the Oregon Coast. Oswald West State Park to the south and Ecola State Park to the north both make extraordinary day hikes. And waking up the morning after your session to walk the beach in the early light — before anyone else is out — is one of those experiences you’ll never forget.

Ready to Plan Your Cannon Beach Engagement Session?

Whether you’re based in the Pacific Northwest or planning a destination session on the Oregon Coast, I would love to be your photographer at Cannon Beach. It’s one of those locations that never stops being extraordinary — and every couple who brings their authentic selves to this beach walks away with a gallery that takes their breath away.

If you’re also planning a destination elopement or a destination wedding on the Oregon Coast or beyond, reach out and let’s start dreaming together. Your love story deserves to be told somewhere as beautiful as this.
