Santorini isn’t just a destination—it’s a dream. With its iconic whitewashed buildings, breathtaking caldera views, and golden sunsets, it’s no wonder so many couples choose this Greek island for their wedding day. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a grand celebration, here’s your guide to the best places to stay, dine, and say “I do” in Santorini.

Where to Stay in Santorini

Rocabella Santorini – Imerovigli

My personal favorite. Rocabella is perched atop the caldera in the serene village of Imerovigli, Rocabella Santorini offers a blend of luxury and authenticity. With its minimalist Cycladic architecture, infinity pools, and panoramic sea views, it’s both a romantic retreat and an ideal wedding venue. Their dedicated wedding team ensures every detail is perfect, from the ceremony to the reception.

Kivotos Santorini – Imerovigli

For those seeking exclusivity, Kivotos Santorini boasts just ten suites and three villas, each with private terraces and plunge pools. The hotel’s dark, volcanic-inspired design contrasts beautifully with the island’s typical whitewashed aesthetic, offering a unique and luxurious experience.

For wine lovers, Venetsanos Winery provides a unique venue overlooking the caldera. Exchange vows amidst the vineyards and enjoy a reception featuring local wines and cuisine.

When is the Best Time to Get Married in Santorini?

The best time to get married in Santorini is May through early October. This is when the weather is warm, the skies are clear, and the island is buzzing with life. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • May & June – Warm, not too crowded, and everything’s in bloom. A favorite for couples who want sunshine without the summer rush.

  • July & August – Peak season with vibrant energy and perfect beach weather, but it can be hot and busy—especially in the more touristy areas.

  • September & Early October – Still warm and sunny but quieter, with golden sunsets and fewer tourists. It’s incredibly romantic and one of my personal favorites.

Avoid late fall and winter if you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony or golden hour portraits—many venues close for the season, and the weather can be unpredictable. I have been at the beginning of Summer and also the end of peak season (late October), and both times many stores and restaurants were closed because it wasn’t quite peak season for the island. Remember Santorini is a small island, not a large city.

Everything You Need to Know Before Planning a Wedding in Santorini

Santorini is arguably the most romanticized wedding destination in the world — and for good reason. The whitewashed buildings, the endless blue of the Aegean Sea, the volcanic cliffs, and that legendary golden light make it feel like a place that exists outside of ordinary time. But as dreamy as it is, planning a wedding in Santorini comes with its own set of logistics that are worth knowing before you dive in. Here’s what I’d tell any couple considering it:

Start Planning Early — Much Earlier Than You Think

Santorini is one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the world, which means venues, photographers, officiants, and vendors book up incredibly fast. If you have a specific date or venue in mind, you should ideally be planning 12 to 18 months in advance — sometimes even further out for peak season dates. The island’s most coveted venues, particularly those perched along the caldera in Oia and Fira, are often reserved a year or more ahead of time. Don’t wait until you’re engaged to start researching — start now.

Understand the Legal Requirements

Getting legally married in Greece requires quite a bit of paperwork, and the process can vary depending on your nationality and whether you are having a civil or religious ceremony. Most international couples choose to handle the legal paperwork in their home country and then have a symbolic ceremony in Santorini — this is by far the most common and stress-free route. If you do want a legally binding ceremony on the island, be prepared to gather documents like birth certificates, proof of single status, and passport copies well in advance, and work with a local wedding planner who knows the Greek legal process inside and out.

Hire a Wedding Planner

This is non-negotiable for a destination wedding in Santorini. A local planner who has established relationships with vendors on the island is worth every penny. They will know which venues are actually worth the price, which caterers deliver consistently, how to navigate the island’s strict building regulations, and how to handle the inevitable last-minute hiccups that come with planning a wedding thousands of miles from home. Look for planners who have been working on the island for several years and who have a portfolio that genuinely reflects your style.

Choose Your Village Wisely

Santorini is made up of several distinct villages, each with its own character and vibe — and the one you choose will set the entire tone of your wedding.

  • Oia is the most iconic and photogenic village on the island, known for its dramatic cliffside views and stunning sunsets. It’s also the most crowded and most expensive. If you want that quintessential Santorini look, Oia delivers — but be prepared to share it with a lot of tourists.
  • Fira is the island’s capital and offers more accessibility and a wider range of venues. It’s busier and more commercial than Oia but has a lively energy that some couples love.
  • Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera and offers sweeping panoramic views with a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than Oia or Fira. It’s a favorite among couples who want the drama without the crowds.
  • Pyrgos is an inland village that often gets overlooked but is absolutely stunning — a hilltop labyrinth of medieval architecture with incredible 360-degree views of the entire island. It feels authentically Greek in a way that the caldera villages sometimes don’t.
  • Akrotiri and the island’s southern end offer more privacy, beautiful red and black sand beaches, and a more relaxed atmosphere that works beautifully for intimate elopements and small weddings.

Plan Around the Light — and the Crowds

Santorini’s sunset is world famous, and for good reason — but it also means that Oia’s famous sunset viewing point is absolutely packed with tourists every single evening during peak season. If your ceremony or photos are planned around sunset, work with your photographer to find locations that give you that golden light without the crowds in the background. A skilled local photographer will know exactly where to take you.

Speaking of light — Santorini’s midday sun is harsh and unforgiving, especially in July and August. The best light for photography is in the early morning (before 10am) and in the two hours before sunset. Plan your timeline accordingly.

Know Your Season

  • Peak Season (July & August) is hot, crowded, and expensive — but the light is long, the energy is electric, and the sea is perfectly warm. Expect higher vendor prices and fully booked venues.
  • Shoulder Season (May, June, September & October) is widely considered the sweet spot for a Santorini wedding. The weather is warm and gorgeous, the crowds are more manageable, and vendors are slightly more available. September and October in particular offer some of the most beautiful light of the year.
  • Off Season (November through April) is quieter and more affordable, but many venues and vendors close entirely during the winter months. Some couples love the intimacy of an off-season elopement, but availability is limited.

Budget Realistically

A wedding in Santorini is a significant investment. Between venue fees, catering, florals, accommodation for you and your guests, and the logistics of a destination event, most couples spend anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 or more depending on the size and scale of the celebration. Even an intimate elopement with just the two of you will likely run $5,000 to $10,000 once you factor in travel, accommodation, a photographer, an officiant, and florals. Go in with a realistic budget and prioritize the elements that matter most to you.

Think About Your Guests’ Experience

If you’re inviting guests to travel to Santorini for your wedding, remember that you are asking them to make a significant investment of time and money. Make it worth their while — share accommodation recommendations at a range of price points, plan a welcome dinner the night before, and consider organizing a group activity like a catamaran sailing trip or a wine tasting at one of the island’s beautiful wineries. The more you help your guests navigate the logistics, the more relaxed and present everyone will be on your wedding day.

Don’t Skip the Honeymoon Extension

If you’re flying all the way to Greece, please don’t just stay for the wedding weekend. Santorini alone deserves at least four or five days to explore properly — and the rest of Greece is waiting. Mykonos, Crete, Athens, and the lesser known islands of Milos and Paros are all within easy reach and make for an unforgettable honeymoon extension. Greece rewards slow travel, so give yourself the time to actually experience it.

Find a Photographer Who Knows the Island

I have been to Santorini, photographed a few elopements and I can see exactly why it’s important to hire someone who knows the locations well. Santorini’s landscapes are stunning but they can also be tricky to photograph well — the bright white buildings reflect harsh light, the crowds at popular spots are relentless, and the most beautiful hidden locations take local knowledge to find. Working with a photographer who has shot on the island before — or who is willing to scout locations ahead of your session — makes an enormous difference in the final images. Look for someone whose portfolio shows a genuine understanding of light, architecture, and the unique mood of the island.

Final Thoughts on Where to Get Married in Santorini

Santorini combines natural beauty with rich culture, making it an idyllic setting for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. Whether you’re drawn to the luxurious ambiance of Rocabella, the culinary delights of local tavernas, or the romantic vistas of the caldera, this island offers everything you need for a dream wedding.

And if you are considering combining your Santorini wedding with an engagement session in another European city beforehand — Paris, Rome, or Florence are all incredible options — it’s a beautiful way to ease into the experience and get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

Santorini is worth every bit of the planning it takes. There is truly nowhere else in the world quite like it — and a wedding there is something your guests will talk about for the rest of their lives. If you’re dreaming of saying your vows on a cliffside above the Aegean with the sun melting into the sea behind you, let’s talk. I would love to be there to capture every moment.
