Engagement Session Locations: 7 Location Ideas for Every Couple
One of the first big milestones in your wedding journey is your engagement session—and choosing the right location can elevate your photos from simple portraits to a true reflection of your story as a couple. As a Utah wedding photographer starting my wedding photography business in Seattle 16 years ago, I’ve had the honor of photographing couples in a wide range of locations—from scenic mountain trails in Aspen to bustling downtown streets, peaceful beaches to faraway destinations. In this post, I’m sharing my top engagement session location ideas, along with the pros, logistics, and who they’re best suited for.
1. Mountain Engagement Sessions
Best for: Adventurous couples who love the outdoors
Top Spots: Big Cottonwood Canyon (Utah), Mount Rainier National Park (WA), Snowbasin, and Snoqualmie Pass
There’s something incredibly romantic about towering peaks and alpine air. Mountain engagement session locations offer stunning backdrops that change with the seasons—wildflowers in the summer, golden aspens in the fall, and snowy wonderlands in winter. Just be prepared for a bit of hiking, unpredictable weather, and layers for warmth.
2. Beach Engagement Sessions
Best for: Couples who want a relaxed, romantic vibe
Top Spots: Ruby Beach (WA), Cannon Beach (OR), Great Salt Lake (UT), Alki Beach (Seattle)
Barefoot in the sand, waves crashing in the background, and a soft sea breeze—it’s dreamy, laid-back, and perfect for golden hour. I always recommend flowy dresses, natural hair, and embracing the wind and saltwater for truly magical, unposed moments. This is one of my all time favorite engagement session locations. You can see why below. It’s just so dreamy!
3. Downtown/Urban Engagement Sessions
Best for: Modern couples, city lovers, and fashion-forward duos
Top Spots: Downtown Salt Lake City, Discovery Park, Pioneer Square in Seattle, Capitol Hill, and Gas Works Park for skyline views.
Another great engagement session locations are ones with an urban setting. It adds architectural lines, textures, and an editorial edge to your engagement photos. From brick walls and graffiti art to rooftop skylines and historic buildings, this vibe is great if you want something chic and stylish. Pro tip: plan your session during early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
4. Destination Engagement Sessions
Best for: Travel-loving couples or those planning a destination wedding
Top Spots: Paris, Santorini, Hawaii, even Park City or Leavenworth for a local destination feel
If you’re traveling for a special vacation or planning a destination wedding, why not schedule your engagement session there too? Destination sessions are adventurous, unique, and offer once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities. I’ve traveled around the world capturing love stories—and trust me, it’s always worth it. If you are seeking a destination feel but without the price tag, Leavenworth, Sunstone Winery, Lake Chelan or Park City have a great European destination vibe.
5. At-Home or In-Home Engagement Sessions
Best for: Couples who want something cozy, personal, and laid-back
Top Ideas: Your first home together, a cute Airbnb, or a styled picnic in your backyard
In-home engagement sessions are all about connection and authenticity. Whether you’re cuddling on the couch with your dog or sipping coffee in your kitchen, these photos often become the most meaningful because they reflect your real life together. Bonus: they’re weather-proof!
6. Studio Engagement Sessions
Best for: Minimalist couples or anyone wanting full control over light and aesthetic
Top Spots: Natural light studios in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and surrounding areas (trust me, I know the spots!)
Studio sessions are perfect for styled shoots or when weather is unpredictable. With clean backgrounds and controlled lighting, we can get creative with posing, wardrobe, and storytelling. I know it’s not the most ideal engagement session locations, but I promise it delivers gorgeous, intimate photos with no distraction.
7. Seasonal & Themed Engagement Sessions
Best for: Couples who love a little extra flair or tradition
Ideas: Fall leaves in the Wasatch Mountains, cherry blossoms in Seattle, snowy winter lodge vibes, spring wildflowers, or a holiday-themed session
Timing your engagement session around the seasons can help elevate your story visually. Think cozy blankets in the snow, boots and scarves in autumn, or soft pastels for spring. I have more photos of different seasons to choose from in my engagement guide.
When it comes to planning your engagement session, think about locations that reflect your personalities, your relationship, and your shared story. Whether you’re hiking up a mountain trail or strolling through downtown with coffee in hand, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, connected, and yourselves.
As a wedding photographer based in Utah and Seattle, I offer guidance and personalized location suggestions for every couple I work with. So whether you’re dreaming of a beachy sunset session or a cozy in-home vibe, I’m here to help you find the perfect spot and capture it all.
