A Whimsical Roche Harbor Wedding

Some weddings just feel like they were meant to happen in a specific place—and that was absolutely the case for this beautifully whimsical, nautical-inspired celebration at Roche Harbor.

The couple, who live together on a sailboat (yes, actually live on the water!), chose Roche Harbor for its maritime charm and proximity to the coast. With views of bobbing sailboats and salty breezes drifting through the air, this venue felt like a natural extension of their everyday life. It wasn’t about extravagance—it was about them.

The bride’s style was effortlessly bohemian. She spent the entire day barefoot, a true nod to her roots and lifestyle. Her hair was styled in long braids adorned with delicate sprigs of baby’s breath—simple, romantic, and uniquely her. It set the tone for the entire day: untraditional, laid-back, and completely personal.

We spent the early part of the day exploring Friday Harbor, chasing the best light and most scenic coastal backdrops. Each spot felt like a piece of their story—waves crashing against the rocks, moss-covered trees hugging the shoreline, and that soft golden light that makes everything feel magical. These weren’t just wedding portraits; they were love letters to the life they’ve built on the sea.

And as if this wedding couldn’t be more personal, the bride—who happens to be an incredibly talented cake designer—made her own wedding cake. It was as stunning as you’d expect, designed with gentle textures and a soft ocean-inspired color palette that tied in with the surrounding landscape.

Their first dance was one of my favorite parts of the day. Set outdoors with the harbor glimmering in the background, they swayed and laughed together, showing off their playful side. It felt spontaneous and real—the kind of moment that sticks with you long after the song ends.

As the sun dipped low, we snuck away for a few last photos. The light was warm and golden, wrapping around them like a quiet little blessing to end the day. Those final frames felt like the perfect punctuation to a story that was full of character, meaning, and a love that doesn’t follow any script.

If I had to describe this day in one word, it would be authentic. It was a celebration that tossed tradition overboard in favor of something deeper—connection, freedom, and joy. And I was so honored to be there to capture it all.

A Little History of Roche Harbor

Nestled on the north end of San Juan Island, Roche Harbor is more than just a beautiful waterfront wedding venue—it’s a place with deep roots and rich Pacific Northwest history. Originally established in the late 1800s as a limeworks company, Roche Harbor was once home to the largest lime-producing operation on the West Coast. The historic Hotel de Haro, built in 1886, still stands today as a charming centerpiece of the harbor, with its wraparound porch, white siding, and ivy-covered balconies.

Over the years, Roche Harbor has transformed from a working industrial hub into a peaceful and romantic destination known for its marina, gardens, and sunsets over the water. It carries that perfect blend of old-world charm and coastal serenity—making it an unforgettable backdrop for couples looking to tie the knot in a place steeped in both beauty and history.
