A Sunset Engagement Session in Anacortes, Washington: Will & Mayra at Cap Sante Park
Panoramic views of the San Juan Islands, golden hour light spilling across Fidalgo Bay, a vintage car, and a love story as effortless as the Pacific Northwest breeze.
If you’ve been searching for the most beautiful engagement session locations in Washington State and haven’t yet discovered Anacortes, let me change that right now. Tucked on Fidalgo Island in the northern Puget Sound, Anacortes is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most genuinely stunning and underutilized photography destinations — a small seaside town that punches so far above its weight visually that every couple I bring here comes away with a gallery that looks like it was taken somewhere much more famous.
Will and Mayra’s sunset session at Cap Sante Park is one of my absolute favorite galleries from any engagement session I’ve photographed in Washington. Not just because of the light — though golden hour here is extraordinary — but because of how completely and unapologetically themselves these two were from the first moment we arrived. Their laughter, their ease, the vintage car they cruise around in on date nights, the way they looked at each other as the sun sank below the horizon — all of it came together into something that felt less like a photoshoot and more like a love story simply being lived.
This post is for every couple considering an engagement session in the Pacific Northwest who wants to know exactly why Anacortes deserves to be at the top of their list — and everything they need to know to make their session extraordinary.
Why Anacortes Is One of Washington’s Best Kept Engagement Session Secrets
Anacortes sits on Fidalgo Island, connected to the Washington mainland by bridge and accessible from Seattle in approximately 80 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. It serves as the gateway to the San Juan Islands, which means the surrounding water views are extraordinary in every direction — Rosario Strait to the west, Fidalgo Bay to the east, and on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of Mount Baker visible to the northeast.
What makes Anacortes so special for engagement photography isn’t any single location — it’s the extraordinary density of genuinely beautiful shooting environments within a small geographic area. In a single session, you can move from dramatic clifftop overlooks to rocky coastal beaches, from old-growth forest trails to charming downtown streets, without ever driving more than ten minutes between stops. That variety gives a skilled photographer an extraordinary palette to work with throughout a session, producing a gallery that feels layered, dynamic, and visually rich from beginning to end.
It is also, relative to better-known Washington photography destinations like Mount Rainier or Deception Pass, refreshingly uncrowded — particularly during the golden hour window when the light is at its most extraordinary. That means genuine privacy for intimate moments, clean backgrounds without tourists wandering through your frames, and the kind of unhurried, relaxed session experience that produces the most authentic and emotionally powerful images.
The Best Photography Locations in and Around Anacortes
Here is a breakdown of the locations I love most for engagement sessions in the Anacortes area — including the specific qualities that make each one exceptional from a photography standpoint:
Cap Sante Park — The Crown Jewel
Sitting high above downtown Anacortes, Cap Sante Lookout boasts panoramic views of the harbor, the San Juan Islands, and even Mount Baker on clear days. This is where Will and Mayra’s session unfolded — and it remains my single favourite location in the entire area for golden hour engagement photography.
Cap Sante Park is a 37-acre forested promontory at the eastern edge of Anacortes, primarily a viewpoint overlooking the marina, the City of Anacortes, March Point, Fidalgo Bay, and the Cascades. The park sits at an elevation that puts you genuinely above everything — above the harbour, above the water, above the town — with 360-degree views that make every composition feel expansive and cinematic. At golden hour, the water below catches the light and turns molten gold. Sailboats drift across the bay. The Cascades glow pink in the distance. The sky does things that photographers dream about.
The real magic at Cap Sante happens when the golden light reflects off the water, creating a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere. Portrait photographers particularly love the soft light that flatters subjects and adds a warm glow to skin tones. For couples, the combination of the elevated vantage point, the sweeping views, and that extraordinary light creates a portrait environment that photographs with a drama and romance that is very difficult to find anywhere else in Western Washington.
Practical tip: arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to work through the park’s varied viewpoints before the best light arrives. The park has multiple distinct overlooks connected by short trails — each one offering a slightly different angle on the water and the Cascades — so giving yourself time to explore means you won’t miss anything.
Rosario Beach — Dramatic Coastal Beauty
Rosario Beach is one of my favorite places for photos and the most beloved spots for engagement sessions on Fidalgo Island, near Anacortes. It’s part of Deception Pass State Park, and the trails offer rewarding views of tide pools, island vistas, and dramatic cliffsides.
Once you pass Rosario Beach, you walk up a short hill to grassy covered hillsides that overlook the water — an expansive space with gorgeous water views from all angles. Couples have described it as feeling like Scotland, which says everything about the dramatic, windswept quality of the landscape. For photographers, Rosario Beach offers something genuinely distinctive — the rocky coastline, the grassy bluffs, the island views, and the dramatic cliffside all within easy walking distance of the parking area.
This is an especially beautiful location for couples who want their engagement session to feel adventurous and physically immersive — where the environment itself becomes part of the story rather than simply a backdrop.
Washington Park — Versatility and Seclusion
Washington Park is a hidden treasure for photographers. One moment you’re shooting a couple framed against the rocky coastline, and the next you’re deep in the forest capturing portraits under towering evergreens. The less-traveled trails often reveal secluded lookouts and peaceful spots where you can capture the beauty of the Pacific Northwest without distractions.
Washington Park is particularly valuable for sessions where variety matters — if you want your gallery to include both dramatic coastal landscapes and intimate forested moments, this park delivers both within a compact, walkable area. It also tends to be significantly less crowded than Deception Pass, making it an excellent choice for couples who want genuine seclusion.
Deception Pass State Park — Iconic Pacific Northwest Drama
Just south of Anacortes, Deception Pass State Park is approximately 1.5 hours north of Seattle and encompasses over 3,500 acres — actually the most visited state park in Washington. It offers rugged cliffs, incredible sunsets, and old-growth forest. The iconic Deception Pass Bridge — spanning a narrow, dramatic channel between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands — is one of the most recognisable landmarks in all of Washington State and creates a genuinely stunning architectural backdrop for engagement photography.
Bowman Bay, within Deception Pass State Park, is known for its calm waters and peaceful atmosphere. The rocky shores, lush greenery, and still waters reflecting the sky at sunset make it a favorite for engagement shoots. You can start by shooting the picturesque coastline, then move into the forest for more secluded shots, or use the iconic Deception Pass Bridge as a dramatic backdrop.
Note that a Washington Discover Pass is required for parking at any state park trailhead — these can be purchased online in advance or at the park entrance for $10 per day or $30 for an annual pass.
Downtown Anacortes
The charming, historic main street of downtown Anacortes — with its brick buildings, colourful murals, and quaint storefronts — offers a completely different aesthetic from the coastal and forested locations nearby. For couples who want a mix of outdoor adventure and intimate, small-town character in their gallery, a brief stop downtown before heading up to Cap Sante for golden hour can add a warmth and personality to the session that purely natural locations sometimes lack.
Will & Mayra’s Engagement Session: How They Made Cap Sante Completely Their Own
What I remember most about shooting Will and Mayra at Cap Sante Park is how completely at home they seemed in the landscape. Some couples arrive at a scenic location and become slightly performative — self-conscious, aware of the camera, adjusting their poses. Will and Mayra arrived and simply started being themselves, and the landscape organized itself around them as though it had been waiting.
Mayra wore a flowing dress that moved beautifully in the coastal breeze coming off the bay — and I want to speak to this directly, because outfit choice matters enormously for a Cap Sante session. The wind at the overlook is consistent and real, and fabrics that move with it — chiffon, silk, flowing cotton — produce images that feel alive and dimensional in a way that stiffer fabrics simply cannot. The dress caught the golden light as it moved, creating a softness and romance in every frame that no amount of posing could have manufactured. It looked like it had been made for exactly this moment, in exactly this light.
The element that made their gallery truly unforgettable was the vintage car. For Will and Mayra, it wasn’t a prop — it was a genuine part of their love story. The car they drive on date nights, the one that has carried them on countless adventures, the one that means something to them in a way that a rented classic never could. Incorporating it into the session turned what could have been simply beautiful portraits into genuine storytelling — images that say something specific about who these two people are and how they live their love, not just that they happen to be very good-looking in front of a scenic backdrop.
That distinction — between images that are beautiful and images that are true — is what I care about most as a photographer. The views at Cap Sante are available to anyone with a camera and good timing. What I’m there to do is capture something that could only ever belong to you.
What to Wear for an Anacortes Engagement Session
Outfit choice in the Pacific Northwest requires more thought than most other regions — primarily because of the wind and the temperature variation that comes with coastal settings. Here is what I recommend for a Cap Sante or Anacortes area engagement session:
For her: A flowing midi or maxi dress in a warm, muted tone — cream, blush, dusty rose, sage, warm ivory, or soft terracotta — photographs beautifully against the water, the golden grass, and the Pacific Northwest sky. Choose fabrics that move — chiffon, silk, lightweight linen — so the coastal breeze works with your session rather than against it. A tailored coat or cozy wrap for the cooler moments after sunset is both practical and incredibly photogenic. If you prefer something more casual, well-fitted high-waisted jeans with a beautiful top and a leather jacket gives you that effortless Pacific Northwest aesthetic that photographs equally well.
For him: A well-fitted flannel or chambray shirt in a warm, neutral tone — navy, forest green, warm grey, camel — complements both the natural landscape and whatever she is wearing. Layering works especially well in this environment — a shirt under a sweater, a jacket for the cooler evening portion — and gives the images visual depth and variety. Avoid athletic wear or overly casual choices that don’t match the romantic atmosphere of the location.
What to avoid: Overly bright colours and busy patterns compete with the natural landscape rather than complementing it. Matching outfits in identical colours can look dated quickly. Coordinate your tones — warm against warm, cool against cool — rather than trying to match perfectly.
Practical note: Bring layers regardless of the forecast. Cap Sante sits exposed at elevation and the temperature drops noticeably after sunset, particularly in spring and autumn. Comfortable shoes that can handle short gravel trails are essential — elegant footwear for the session, practical footwear for getting there.
The Best Time of Year for an Anacortes Engagement Session
Anacortes and the surrounding Fidalgo Island area are genuinely beautiful in every season, but each offers a different photographic experience worth understanding before you book.
Summer (June through August) is peak season in every sense — the longest days, the most reliable sunshine, the warmest temperatures, and the most tourists. Golden hour in the Pacific Northwest summer doesn’t arrive until 8:30 to 9:30pm, which means you can start a session in the early evening, explore multiple locations in beautiful afternoon light, and still have the full golden hour window available without rushing. Summer sessions at Cap Sante are extraordinary — the water is calm, the sailboats are out, and the light seems to last forever.
Autumn (September through October) is my personal favourite season for Anacortes engagement sessions. The summer crowds thin dramatically, the light becomes softer and more golden earlier in the evening, and the surrounding landscape takes on the warm amber and copper tones that make Pacific Northwest autumn so distinctive. The water views are just as stunning as summer, and the slightly moodier sky conditions often produce even more dramatic sunset images.
Spring (April through May) offers fresh greenery, wildflowers beginning to emerge along the coastal trails, and increasingly long evenings. The weather is less predictable than summer but the light when it appears is extraordinarily beautiful, and the lack of summer tourist traffic makes locations feel more private and intimate.
Winter (November through March) is genuinely dramatic at Cap Sante — moody skies, powerful Pacific light, and a wild, windswept quality to the landscape that produces images unlike any other season. Winter sessions require more planning around weather and daylight hours, but the couples who commit to them consistently come away with galleries that are some of the most visually powerful I’ve ever produced in Washington.
Planning Your Anacortes Engagement Session: Practical Tips
Timing is everything. The golden hour window at Cap Sante is extraordinary but brief. For summer sessions, arrive by 7:30pm for an 8:30 or 9:00pm sunset. For autumn sessions, plan to arrive by 5:30pm for a 6:30 or 7:00pm sunset. The light changes rapidly in the final 30 minutes before sunset, and you want to be positioned and already shooting when it peaks.
Check the weather but embrace the Pacific Northwest. Anacortes weather is famously unpredictable. An overcast day produces beautiful diffused light that is technically easier to work with than harsh direct sun. A light rain creates reflections on the rocky surfaces that add another dimension to coastal portraits. If the forecast looks uncertain, don’t reschedule — some of the most beautiful engagement sessions I’ve photographed in Washington happened in conditions that initially looked less than ideal.
Make a weekend of it. If you’re traveling to Anacortes from Seattle or further afield, give yourselves at least a full day or two. The San Juan Islands ferry terminal is right in town — a day trip to San Juan Island or Orcas Island makes for an extraordinary addition to your engagement trip. The local restaurant scene in Anacortes is genuinely excellent. And waking up on Fidalgo Island to watch the morning light come across the water is an experience worth building time for.
Consider multiple locations. Cap Sante is my first recommendation for the golden hour portion of any Anacortes session, but pairing it with Rosario Beach or Washington Park earlier in the afternoon gives your gallery the visual variety that makes it feel like a complete story rather than a single beautiful setting. Most couples find that two hours gives them enough time to work through two locations comfortably.
Why Anacortes Deserves to Be on Every Pacific Northwest Couple’s Radar
Washington State is full of extraordinary engagement session locations — Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula, Deception Pass, the San Juan Islands themselves. Anacortes and Cap Sante Park belong in that conversation, and I genuinely believe they are underrepresented in it.
The combination of accessibility from Seattle, the extraordinary variety of shooting environments within a small geographic area, the relative privacy compared to more heavily trafficked destinations, and the specific quality of the light over Fidalgo Bay at golden hour makes Anacortes one of the most compelling and underutilized engagement session locations in the entire Pacific Northwest.
For Will and Mayra, it was the perfect backdrop for the beginning of a story that would eventually take them all the way to a destination wedding in the Yucatán. And looking back at these images — the light, the water, the vintage car glowing in the evening gold, the two of them completely lost in each other at the edge of that cliff — it is impossible not to feel how perfectly the location matched the moment.
That is what a great engagement session location does. It doesn’t just look beautiful in photographs. It amplifies the truth of who you are as a couple and makes every genuine moment feel more significant, more cinematic, more worth preserving forever.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Washington State and Anacortes isn’t on your list yet — add it.
