A Wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich: Inside the Most Extraordinary Luxury Wedding Venue in the Yucatán

Three-foot-thick limestone walls, towering Royal Palms, a football field-sized lawn alive with fireflies, and a celebration of love that turned into a full vacation in one of Mexico’s most magical destinations.

Hacienda Sac Chich is one of the most beautiful and luxurious wedding venue in Mexico — it’s a property so extraordinary, so layered with history and natural beauty and architectural wonder, that every single person who drives through its gates for the first time says the same thing: oh my gosh.

I had the profound privilege of photographing Will and Mayra’s winter wedding here, and I have been thinking about it ever since. Not just because the images were extraordinary — though they were — but because of what this venue does to the people inside it. It transforms. It slows time. It makes every moment feel significant and alive in a way that is genuinely rare in any setting, anywhere in the world.

If you are considering a destination wedding in Mexico and Hacienda Sac Chich is on your radar, this post is everything you need to know — the venue, the spaces, the cost, the experience, and why it consistently produces some of the most breathtaking wedding photography I have ever had the privilege of creating.

About Hacienda Sac Chich: A Venue Unlike Anything Else in Mexico

Built from the ruins of a deserted sisal factory, Hacienda Sac Chich has been smartly renovated to capture the historical details of the Spanish Colonial fortress architecture overlaid with modern design touches to create a magical setting. Three-foot-thick masonry walls, 24-foot ceilings, unique caged dry-stacked walls, ponds, pools, and lush gardens all create an outstanding architectural environment.

Combining the historical architecture of a 17th-century renovated henequen factory and an award-winning contemporary residence, Hacienda Sac Chich is one of the most unique hacienda wedding venues in the Yucatán. The henequen plant — whose fibres were once spun into rope and twine and exported around the world — was the economic foundation of the Yucatán for centuries, and the haciendas built around that industry are some of the most architecturally significant structures in all of Mexico. Sac Chich captures that history with extraordinary care, preserving the iron wheels, massive wooden beams, and limestone structures of the original factory while layering in a level of contemporary design sophistication that feels genuinely world-class.

The house restoration has been a project of the renowned Mexican architect Salvador Reyes Rios and his partner and wife Josefina Larrain, with most of the furniture throughout designed by Salvador and fabricated locally. This detail matters enormously in the context of a wedding venue — because every piece of furniture, every architectural detail, every landscaping decision has been made by artists rather than hospitality corporations. The result is a property that feels deeply intentional and completely irreplaceable — a place that could not exist anywhere else in the world, at any other time.

Hacienda Sac Chich is just a 30-minute drive from Mérida but feels like a world away — nestled in the lush Yucatán jungle, it seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern design, offering accommodations for up to 21 guests and event space for up to 150.

The Wedding Spaces at Hacienda Sac Chich

One of the most extraordinary things about Hacienda Sac Chich from a wedding planning perspective is that the property offers multiple completely distinct settings within a single exclusive-use estate — which means your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can each feel like a different world without anyone traveling more than a few hundred feet.

Casa de Máquinas — The Historic Heart

Tucked away on the lush grounds, Casa de Máquinas is a complex of three limestone buildings, a water tower, and an 85-foot chimney, surrounded by palm-filled gardens. The three 2,000-square-foot rectangular structures date back to 1850, and throughout the hacienda there is evidence of its previous utilitarian life — iron wheels and massive beams that are remnants of its industrial past.

This is the architectural soul of the property — the space that makes guests stop and simply stare when they first arrive. The combination of raw historic limestone, iron industrial details, and 24-foot ceilings creates a visual drama that is completely unlike anything produced by a purpose-built event space. Every portrait taken against Casa de Máquinas carries a weight and a sense of place that is entirely authentic — because it is authentic, in the deepest possible sense.

The Loggia

The Loggia, part of the historic Casa de Máquinas complex, offers a perfect setting for wedding ceremonies, cocktail parties, and banquets. This limestone structure, which dates back to 1850 and is surrounded by palm-filled gardens, combines elegance with natural beauty. With its ample space and rustic yet elegant ambiance, the Loggia offers a versatile setting that can accommodate any style of wedding — whether an intimate open-air ceremony or a lively evening reception.

For photographers, the Loggia is exceptional. The combination of the open limestone arches, the palm-filled gardens visible through every opening, and the soft filtered light that fills the space throughout the day creates portrait conditions that feel almost too beautiful to be real. Ceremony images taken in the Loggia have a timeless, cinematic quality that I have found difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Casa Sisal

Casa Sisal is adjacent to Hacienda Sac Chich’s Casa de Máquinas and offers a completely different aesthetic — modern and chic, yet constructed using traditional Yucatecan techniques. Built using the colonial method called ‘mamposteria,’ the walls were carefully constructed by hand with cut stones and cement. Located adjacent to Casa Vieja’s pool and garden area, it represents the contemporary counterpart to the hacienda’s historic structures.

Casa Sisal is where the property’s design sophistication becomes most apparent — clean lines, a sleek reflecting pool, lush lawn, and a refined simplicity that makes it particularly beautiful for getting-ready photography, first looks, and open-air dinners. The contrast between Casa Sisal’s contemporary geometry and the raw historic grandeur of Casa de Máquinas gives the property a visual range that few venues anywhere can match.

The Great Lawn

The Great Lawn is where the scale of Hacienda Sac Chich reveals itself most dramatically — and where Will and Mayra’s reception came alive in the most extraordinary way. From intimate garden and pool settings to the Great Lawn — a football field-sized expanse lined with Royal Palms — Hacienda Sac Chich provides different unique spaces to make your event perfect.

At dusk, the lawn comes alive with thousands of twinkling fireflies — and if you have never experienced the magic of dancing under the stars on a Mexican hacienda lawn while fireflies drift through the warm night air around you, I genuinely cannot do justice to what that feels like in words. It is one of those experiences that your guests will describe to people for the rest of their lives.

In the evening, the hacienda grounds are always spectacular and breathtaking, with hundreds of strategically placed outdoor lights throughout the property — creating a warmth and romance that transforms every corner of the estate as the sun goes down.

The Pool and Gardens

Once the water tank for the hacienda, the freshwater pool is now a shimmering refuge from the Yucatán heat. A steel and bamboo pergola and a playita of shallow water with a hammock suspended above provide areas for rest and shade. Beyond the pool, in a hidden garden, lies a regulation-size bocce ball court.

The pool area is one of the most photographed spaces on the property — and understandably so. The combination of the historic stone structures framing the water, the bamboo pergola casting dappled shade, and the lush tropical planting in every direction creates a portrait environment that feels like it was designed specifically for wedding photography.

Will and Mayra’s Winter Wedding: How They Made It Their Own

Will and Mayra’s celebration was everything a Hacienda Sac Chich wedding should be — intentional, personal, culturally rich, and genuinely joyful from beginning to end. Their guest list of fewer than 75 people — just family and their closest friends — gave the entire weekend a warmth and intimacy that a larger celebration simply could not have replicated.

The Ceremony

Vows were exchanged in one of the hacienda’s garden settings, surrounded by tropical palms and the vibrant flora that fills every corner of the property. The décor was deliberately minimal — which is always the right instinct at Hacienda Sac Chich. When your backdrop includes 17th-century limestone architecture, towering Royal Palms, and gardens that have been cultivated for decades, competing with that beauty is genuinely counterproductive. The historic ambiance needs space to breathe, and Will and Mayra gave it exactly that.

The Reception

The Great Lawn transformed into an extraordinary evening setting — guests seated beneath the stars with the Royal Palms rising on either side, the hacienda’s strategic lighting turning every corner of the property golden, and the warm December air making the entire scene feel like something from a dream.

In a decision that said everything about who Will and Mayra are as a couple, they replaced a traditional wedding cake with a churro cart — and it was one of the most joyful moments of the entire day. The immediate, universal delight it produced in every single guest, from the youngest to the oldest, was exactly the kind of genuine celebration magic that no amount of careful planning can manufacture but every couple hopes for.

The Cultural Details

The most memorable celebrations at Hacienda Sac Chich are the ones that lean into the Yucatán’s extraordinary cultural richness — and Will and Mayra did this beautifully. Mariachi bands entertained guests through the evening, and late-night marquesita carts — a beloved Yucatecan street food tradition featuring crispy rolled wafers filled with Edam cheese and your choice of sweet toppings — gave the celebration an authentically local character that guests who traveled from across the US and Mexico described as one of the most special and memorable elements of the entire weekend.

These details are worth noting for any couple planning a Hacienda Sac Chich wedding: the local vendors, the local food, the local musical traditions — they are not just logistical choices. They are the elements that make a destination wedding feel genuinely immersive rather than simply relocated. Hacienda Sac Chich’s location in the heart of the Yucatán gives you access to one of the richest culinary and cultural traditions in all of Mexico. Use it.

The Weekend Experience

What made Will and Mayra’s celebration particularly extraordinary was the decision to turn their wedding into a genuine vacation experience for their guests. With family and close friends staying on-site at the hacienda and spending multiple days together on the property — swimming, exploring, sharing meals, staying up late talking — the wedding stopped being a single event and became a shared memory that belongs to everyone who was there. That is the gift that a venue like Hacienda Sac Chich makes possible in a way that almost no other wedding venue can replicate.

What Does a Wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich Cost?

Hacienda Sac Chich sits firmly in the luxury destination wedding category, and understanding the cost structure upfront is essential for realistic budget planning. Here is a comprehensive breakdown:

Accommodation — $375 to $1,650 USD per night

Room rental rates at Hacienda Sac Chich vary depending on the estimated number of guests, time of year, and day of the week, generally ranging from $375 USD per night to $1,650 USD per night. Peak season runs October through May. A three-night minimum is commonly required for on-site stays, with approximately eight rooms available on the property plus additional nearby options if needed.

During peak season, October through May, any event requires a minimum three-night stay of lodging in the hacienda, which sleeps up to 21 guests. For couples whose guest lists exceed the on-site accommodation capacity, nearby boutique hotels in Mérida — just 30 minutes away — offer a wide range of options at various price points, and many couples arrange shuttle transportation between the city and the hacienda for arriving and departing guests.

Event Fee

The event fee will depend on the number of guests. Hacienda Sac Chich does not publish a fixed event fee publicly — pricing is personalised to each wedding based on guest count, duration, and specific space requirements. Contact the property directly for current pricing that reflects your specific event needs.

Total Wedding Budget

A 150-guest wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich surpassed USD $50,000 without the venue cost included in 2023 — providing a useful benchmark for budget planning. When accommodation, the event fee, catering, florals, music, photography, and additional vendor costs are considered together, most full weddings at Hacienda Sac Chich for 75 to 150 guests run between $60,000 and $120,000 USD, with smaller, more intimate celebrations for 20 to 40 guests achievable for significantly less.

Catering — External, With Local Excellence

Hacienda Sac Chich does not provide in-house catering — couples work with their wedding planner to select from the region’s best caterers, giving you complete creative freedom over your menu. Yucatecan cuisine is extraordinary — a deeply distinctive regional tradition that draws on Mayan, Spanish, and Caribbean influences to produce flavours unlike anything found elsewhere in Mexico. Local caterers specialising in traditional Yucatecan dishes — cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, panuchos, marquesitas — bring an authenticity to the celebration that imported catering simply cannot replicate. Budget approximately $80 to $150 USD per person for full-service catering including food, bar service, and staffing.

A Wedding Planner is Non-Negotiable

A wedding planner is necessary to coordinate all vendor details at Hacienda Sac Chich. This is not simply a recommendation — it is a requirement that the property enforces, and for very good reason. Planning a destination wedding in the Yucatán from abroad involves navigating local vendor relationships, transportation logistics, accommodation coordination, and a regulatory environment that is genuinely complex without local expertise. A planner who knows Hacienda Sac Chich specifically — who has relationships with the property manager, the best local caterers, floralists, musicians, and rental companies — is the single most important investment you will make outside of the venue itself.

Photography — $4,000 to $10,000+ USD

The photography conditions at Hacienda Sac Chich are extraordinary — and they reward a photographer who understands how to work with them specifically. The interplay between the 24-foot limestone ceilings and the soft filtered light that fills the historic structures, the way the evening lighting transforms the grounds, the extraordinary range of settings available without ever leaving the property — all of it requires both technical skill and genuine familiarity with the venue’s rhythms throughout the day. Most experienced destination wedding photographers charge between $4,000 and $8,000 USD for full-day coverage at a Hacienda Sac Chich wedding, with additional travel and accommodation costs for photographers not based in the Mérida area.

Why Hacienda Sac Chich Photographs Unlike Anywhere Else

I want to speak to this directly, because for couples who care deeply about their wedding photography — which is most of the couples drawn to a venue like Hacienda Sac Chich — understanding what makes this property so visually extraordinary is genuinely useful.

The Light

The Yucatán’s light is unlike anything in North America or Europe. The combination of the tropical latitude, the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, and the specific quality of the air produces a warmth and luminosity that makes every image feel more vivid, more saturated, and more alive than photography taken at equivalent times of day elsewhere. Golden hour at Hacienda Sac Chich — when the low sun catches the limestone walls of Casa de Máquinas and turns them copper, when the Royal Palms cast long shadows across the Great Lawn, when the pool reflects the darkening sky — is one of the most extraordinary photography environments I have ever worked in.

The Architectural Variety

The range of settings available within the property’s grounds — from the raw industrial grandeur of the original factory structures to the clean contemporary lines of Casa Sisal, from the intimate garden courtyards to the sweeping expanse of the Great Lawn — gives a skilled photographer an extraordinary palette to work with throughout the day. A Hacienda Sac Chich wedding gallery should never feel repetitive or one-note. Every part of the day looks completely different from every other part, and the visual narrative that emerges from that variety is deeply compelling.

The Natural World

The grounds are filled with exotic rare palms, bamboos, gingers, tropical plants, and fruit trees. Sunrise and sunsets are filled with birdsong. At dusk the lawn comes alive with thousands of twinkling fireflies. These elements — the sounds, the movement, the living natural world that fills every corner of the property — create an atmosphere in photographs that goes beyond what any set of architectural backdrops can provide. There is something alive and breathing and genuinely wild about Hacienda Sac Chich that shows up in the images in a way that is very difficult to articulate but immediately recognisable when you see it.

Planning Your Hacienda Sac Chich Wedding: Everything You Need to Know

Getting There

The nearest airport to Hacienda Sac Chich is Mérida International Airport (MID), approximately 45 minutes away. Cancún International Airport is approximately three hours away and offers significantly more direct international flight connections, making it the more practical arrival point for guests traveling from North America or Europe. Many couples arrange private shuttle or van transportation between Cancún or Mérida and the hacienda, which adds a logistical layer worth planning carefully with your wedding planner.

The Best Season

November through April offers the best weather for outdoor celebrations at Hacienda Sac Chich — warm temperatures, lower humidity, and significantly reduced rainfall compared to the Yucatán’s summer rainy season. Will and Mayra chose December, and the conditions were genuinely perfect — warm evenings, clear skies, and the kind of dry air that makes outdoor dancing feel effortless rather than exhausting.

Summer weddings (May through September) are possible and can be extraordinary — the lush greenery of the rainy season makes the property feel even more densely tropical and visually rich — but the humidity and afternoon rain are real considerations that require thoughtful planning and a genuine indoor backup option.

Incorporating Yucatecan Tradition

The cultural richness of the Yucatán is one of the most compelling reasons to celebrate here — and the best Hacienda Sac Chich weddings lean into it fully. Mariachi or jarana music. A traditional Yucatecan dinner featuring cochinita pibil and regional specialties. A marquesita cart at the end of the night. A cenote excursion for guests staying the weekend — the crystalline underground freshwater pools of the Yucatán are among the most extraordinary natural environments in the world, and several are within 30 minutes of the hacienda. A mezcal or Xtabentún tasting as part of the welcome experience.

These elements don’t make your wedding feel less personal — they make it feel more specific to its place in the world, which is exactly the point of a destination celebration.

What to Explore Beyond the Hacienda

Within approximately 30 minutes of Hacienda Sac Chich, you will find the Cuzamá cenotes, Santa Bárbara, and Homún, while culturally the ancient walled city of Mayapán offers an experience reminiscent of Chichén Itzá. The colonial city of Mérida — one of the most beautiful and culturally vibrant cities in Mexico — is 30 minutes in the other direction, with extraordinary restaurants, markets, galleries, and architecture that make it genuinely worth several days of exploration. For couples who want to give their guests a complete Yucatán experience alongside the wedding celebration, the surrounding region delivers that effortlessly.

A Final Note: Why This Venue Stays With You

One reviewer described Hacienda Sac Chich this way: “The light, sky and sounds all contribute to the OMG sign everyone who enters utters when they first arrive. But as the many reviews will tell you, the pictures cannot do justice to the overall sense of being there.”

That is the most honest description of what makes this venue so extraordinary — and it is also the thing that makes photographing here so deeply meaningful. The photographs I made of Will and Mayra’s celebration are some of the images I am most proud of from my entire career. Not because I did anything particularly clever, but because the venue, the light, the people, and the moment all came together into something genuinely beautiful — and my job was simply to be present for it and not miss anything.

If you are dreaming of a destination wedding in Mexico and you want a venue that will transform your celebration into a multi-day experience your guests will talk about for the rest of their lives — one that is rooted in history, saturated in natural beauty, and alive with the extraordinary culture of the Yucatán — Hacienda Sac Chich is waiting for you.

And if you are looking for a photographer who has spent time on this property, who understands its light and its rhythms and every corner that comes alive at golden hour — I would love to be part of your story.
