The moon was so bright that night, but it made their wedding celebration even more magical.

Will and Mayra decided to include delicious, fresh churros for their dessert besides their wedding cake, which they decided to cut at the end of the night. Mayra really wanted to keep some wedding traditions for their wedding and let some old traditions go. Like hiring a mariachi band to play at the beginning of their wedding reception.

About Hacienda Sac Chich: A Venue Unlike Anything Else in Mexico

Here’s the history, because I think it matters. This hacienda was built from the ruins of a deserted sisal factory, then thoughtfully renovated to preserve the Spanish Colonial fortress architecture while layering in modern design. Three-foot-thick masonry walls. 24-foot ceilings. Caged dry-stacked stone walls, ponds, pools, gardens spilling over with green. It’s an architectural environment like nothing else you’ll find.

Hacienda Sac Chich sits just 30 minutes from Mérida, but it feels like a different world entirely: tucked into the lush Yucatán jungle, blending old-world charm with modern design, with room for up to 21 guests to stay on-site and event space for up to 150.

The Wedding Spaces at Hacienda Sac Chich

One of my favorite things about this property, from a planning standpoint, is that your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can each feel like a completely different world, all without anyone walking more than a few hundred feet. That’s a gift, both for your guests and for me behind the camera.

Casa de Máquinas: The Historic Heart

Tucked into the grounds, Casa de Máquinas is a cluster of three limestone buildings, a water tower, and an 85-foot chimney, all wrapped in palm-filled gardens. These 2,000-square-foot rectangular structures date back to 1850, and you can still see evidence of the property’s industrial past everywhere: iron wheels, massive beams, remnants of a working factory.

This is the soul of the property. It’s the space that makes your guests stop in their tracks the moment they arrive. That mix of raw limestone, industrial iron details, and 24-foot ceilings creates a kind of visual drama you just can’t manufacture in a purpose-built event space. Every portrait taken here carries real weight, because it’s authentic in the deepest sense of the word.

The Loggia

Part of the Casa de Máquinas complex, the Loggia is a perfect setting for ceremonies, cocktail parties, and dinners. This 1850s limestone structure, wrapped in palm-filled gardens, blends elegance with raw natural beauty, flexible enough for an intimate open-air ceremony or a lively evening reception.

For photography, this space is exceptional. The open limestone arches, gardens visible through every opening, soft filtered light throughout the day: it all creates portrait conditions that feel almost too beautiful to be real. Ceremonies here have a timeless, cinematic quality I haven’t found anywhere else.

Casa Sisal

Right next to Casa de Máquinas, Casa Sisal is a completely different vibe: modern and chic, but built with traditional Yucatecan techniques. It uses the colonial method called mamposteria, with walls hand-built from cut stone and cement. It sits beside Casa Vieja’s pool and garden area, and it’s the contemporary counterpart to the property’s historic bones.

This is where the design sophistication really shines: clean lines, a sleek reflecting pool, lush lawn. It’s especially beautiful for getting-ready photos, first looks, and open-air dinners. The contrast between Casa Sisal’s contemporary geometry and the raw grandeur of Casa de Máquinas gives this property a visual range that very few venues anywhere can match.

The Great Lawn

This is where the scale of Hacienda Sac Chich really hits you, and where Will and Mayra’s reception came alive in the most incredible way. From the intimate garden and pool settings to the Great Lawn (a football-field-sized expanse lined with Royal Palms), this venue gives you so many distinct spaces to work with.

At dusk, the lawn lights up with thousands of fireflies. Friend, if you’ve never danced under the stars on a Mexican hacienda lawn while fireflies drift through the warm night air, I genuinely cannot put it into words. It’s one of those experiences your guests will be talking about for the rest of their lives.

As the sun goes down, the grounds transform completely: hundreds of strategically placed outdoor lights create warmth and romance in every corner of the property.

The Pool and Gardens

Once the water tank for the hacienda, this freshwater pool is now a shimmering escape from the Yucatán heat. A steel and bamboo pergola and a shallow “playita” with a hanging hammock give you spots to rest and cool off. Just beyond it, tucked in a hidden garden, there’s even a regulation-size bocce ball court.

This is one of the most photographed spots on the property, and it’s easy to see why. The historic stone framing the water, dappled shade from the bamboo pergola, lush tropical planting everywhere you look: it’s a portrait environment that feels custom-built for wedding photography.

Planning Your Hacienda Sac Chich Wedding

Getting There. The closest airport is Mérida International (MID), about 45 minutes away. Cancún International is roughly three hours out but offers more direct international connections, so it’s often the more practical option for guests flying in from North America or Europe. A lot of couples arrange private shuttle service between the airport and the hacienda, definitely something to plan carefully with your wedding planner.

The Best Season. November through April gives you the best weather for outdoor celebrations: warm temperatures, lower humidity, and much less rain than the Yucatán’s summer season. Will and Mayra chose December, and the conditions were genuinely perfect: warm evenings, clear skies, dry air that made dancing outside feel effortless. Summer weddings (May through September) are possible too, and the lush greenery of the rainy season makes the property feel even more densely tropical, but humidity and afternoon rain are real considerations, so you’ll want a genuine indoor backup plan.

Incorporating Yucatecan Tradition. This is one of my favorite reasons to celebrate here, and the best weddings lean into it fully.

Mariachi or jarana music. A traditional Yucatecan dinner with cochinita pibil and regional specialties. A marquesita cart at the end of the night. A cenote excursion for guests staying through the weekend: the crystalline underground freshwater pools of the Yucatán are some of the most extraordinary natural environments in the world, and several sit within 30 minutes of the hacienda. A mezcal or Xtabentún tasting as part of your welcome.

None of this makes your wedding feel less personal, it makes it feel more specific to its place in the world, which is really the whole point of a destination celebration.

What to Explore Beyond the Hacienda. Within about 30 minutes, you’ll find the Cuzamá cenotes, Santa Bárbara, and Homún, and the ancient walled city of Mayapán, which offers an experience reminiscent of Chichén Itzá. Mérida (one of the most beautiful and culturally vibrant cities in Mexico) sits 30 minutes the other direction, with restaurants, markets, and architecture worth several days of exploring on their own.

What Does a Hacienda Sac Chich Wedding Cost?

This venue sits firmly in the luxury destination wedding category, so let’s talk numbers, because realistic budget planning starts here.

Accommodation: $375 to $1,650 USD per night. Rates vary based on estimated guest count, season, and day of the week. Peak season runs October through May, and a three-night minimum is common for on-site stays. The property has about eight rooms available, sleeping up to 21 guests, with nearby Mérida (just 30 minutes away) offering additional options for guests who need more room.

Event Fee. This depends on your guest count, and the hacienda doesn’t publish a fixed number publicly. Pricing is personalized to each wedding based on guest count, duration, and space needs, so you’ll want to contact the property directly.

Total Wedding Budget. For context: a 150-guest wedding here topped $50,000 in 2023, and that’s without the venue cost included. When you factor in accommodation, event fee, catering, florals, music, photography, and other vendors, most full weddings for 75 to 150 guests run between $60,000 and $120,000 USD. Smaller, more intimate celebrations of 20 to 40 guests are achievable for significantly less.

Catering: $80 to $150 USD per person. The hacienda doesn’t provide in-house catering, so you’ll work with your wedding planner to choose from the region’s best local caterers, which gives you total creative freedom over your menu. Yucatecan cuisine draws on Mayan, Spanish, and Caribbean influences, and dishes like cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, and panuchos bring an authenticity that imported catering just can’t replicate.

A Wedding Planner Isn’t Optional. This is a requirement the property enforces, and for good reason. Planning a destination wedding in the Yucatán from another country means navigating local vendor relationships, transportation, accommodation logistics, and a regulatory environment that’s genuinely complex without local expertise. A planner who knows this property specifically, someone with real relationships with the property manager and the best local caterers, florists, musicians, and rental companies, is the single most important investment you’ll make outside of the venue itself.

Photography: $4,000 to $10,000+ USD. The light here is extraordinary, and it rewards a photographer who genuinely understands how to work with it. The interplay between those 24-foot limestone ceilings and the soft filtered light, the way the grounds transform in the evening, the sheer range of settings without ever leaving the property: it takes technical skill, yes, but it also takes real familiarity with how this venue moves throughout the day. Most experienced destination wedding photographers charge $4,000 to $8,000 for full-day coverage at a Hacienda Sac Chich wedding, with travel and accommodation added on top for anyone not based near Mérida.
